Wimbledon 2015: Results, Highlights, Thursday Scores Recap from All England Club

Mike ChiariJul 9, 2015

Serena Williams' quest for a Serena Slam and ultimately a calendar Grand Slam remained intact Thursday as the world No. 1 was victorious in her semifinal match to set up a final showdown with No. 20 Garbine Muguruza at Wimbledon.

The American superstar beat No. 4 Maria Sharapova for the 17th consecutive time, while Muguruza outlasted No. 13 Agnieszka Radwanska to advance to the first Grand Slam final of her young career.

This year's women's singles tournament at All England Club has been unpredictable to say the least, but the overwhelming favorite has put herself in position to maintain the status quo. Based upon how many surprises there have been thus far, though, it is far from guaranteed.

SemifinalsNo. 20 Garbine MuguruzaNo. 13 Agnieszka Radwanska6-2, 3-6, 6-3

Thursday's Wimbledon Recap

Serena entered Thursday's meeting with Sharapova as a prohibitive favorite considering her lengthy track record of success against the Russian, and she certainly didn't disappoint as she prevailed in routine fashion with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

With that victory, Serena cemented the fact that she is more dominant against Sharapova than any other opponent over the course of her career, according to ESPN Stats and Info:

Although Sharapova battled in the second set and was unwilling to give in, there was never any doubt that Williams would be triumphant.

Considering how badly Sharapova has struggled against Serena, ESPN's Bomani Jones quipped that she may have been better off skipping Thursday's match altogether:

Sharapova is as competitive as they come, though, and she will undoubtedly continue to throw everything she has at Serena for as long as she has to face her. Williams clearly respects that, and she had nothing but good things to say about her opponent after the match, per Courtney Nguyen of SI Tennis:

Serena was simply too good in the semifinals, which is a great sign entering the final since she was able to put her sluggish start against Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals behind her.

Williams is now in position to make history as a Wimbledon title would give her the second so-called Serena Slam of her career in the form of four consecutive Grand Slam championships. It would also bring her to within a 2015 U.S. Open title of winning the calendar slam.

Whether she accomplishes that or not, comedian Daniel Tosh already views her as the best of all time:

The argument can certainly be made that Williams is already the best ever, but she is never satisfied. She also can't afford to take her sixth Wimbledon title for granted since she has a big-time challenge ahead.

Earlier in the day, Muguruza scored one of the biggest breakthrough wins of her career as she thwarted a comeback attempt from Radwanska to win 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

The 21-year-old Spaniard has been heralded as a potential star for the past couple years, and she has shown many flashes of brilliance. She had never advanced past the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam prior to this year's Wimbledon event, but now she is just one win away from becoming a champion.

Muguruza very nearly let the match slip away as she allowed her Polish opponent to take the second set after winning the first handily. Radwanska was also pushing to break the six-footer late in the third, but Muguruza dug in and finished her off.

As pointed out by ESPN's Brad Gilbert, Radwanska let one slip away as an ill-advised challenge helped Muguruza close the match out:

It was a huge win for Muguruza not only because it moves her closer to the elite ranks in the women's game, but also because it ended a lengthy drought for Spanish players at Wimbledon, according to ESPN Stats and Info:

Muguruza was overcome with emotion after the victory, and she explained what it meant to her to advance to a final at All England Club, per Wimbledon's official Twitter account:

Most figured the talented youngster would reach this point eventually, but she has defied the timeline by reaching the final just a few years into her career. She has also beaten some big-time players along the way, including Radwanska, who was a Wimbledon finalist in 2012.

Based on how powerful and dangerous Muguruza can be, she feels as though highly ranked players aren't necessarily thrilled with having to play against her, according to Nguyen:

Serena may very well be among those who would rather not face Muguruza as she has struggled against her in the past. Williams is just 2-1 in three career meetings, including a second-round loss in last year's French Open.

The top seed bounced back to defeat Muguruza in the round of 16 at the Australian Open earlier this year, but she needed three sets in order to do it.

Most are ready to crown Serena Wimbledon champion for the sixth time, however, there is no question that she has a very difficult challenge ahead of her. Muguruza may only be seeded 20th, but she has proved that her style of play gives Williams problems.

Serena versus Muguruza is the truest example of an established star trying to ward off a young up-and-comer, and that should make for an extremely entertaining final.
