FIFA World Rankings 2015: Latest International Standings After Copa America 2015

Nick AkermanJul 9, 2015

Argentina's run to the 2015 Copa America final has seen them usurp Germany as the No. 1 nation in FIFA's World Rankings.

July's update sees monumental change, with Chile—winners of the South American tournament—rising eight places to 11th. Spain have dropped below Jorge Sampaoli's side in 12th and now sit behind Romania, England and Wales, three countries who have risen into the top 10.

Here's a look at the current standings:

As ever, FIFA's confusing and convoluted formula is in effect here. The current system works on this formula: result x importance of match x strength of opposition x confederation strength = total points awarded.

Points accumulated are then multiplied by the opponent's federation rating (CONMEBOL 1.00; UEFA 0.99; AFC, CAF, OFC and CONCACAF 0.85), per the governing body's official website, to provide the final number. The value of each result decreases over a four-year "World Cup cycle."

Argentina Topple Germany after Copa America Heartache

The Copa America and a full round of Euro 2016 qualifiers have caused many changes atop the rankings. Argentina can now be considered the world's best after reaching two finals in the space of a year, but without winning either.

Consistency is key to progressing up the rankings, so failures in the World Cup and Copa America showpieces don't stop Gerardo Martino's men from toppling Germany, who lost to the United States (34th) and thrashed non-ranked Gibraltar in their two matches since the June update.

Joachim Low's squad are the biggest losers by points, giving up 364 in the space of a month. Central African Republic (170th) dropped 29 places to suffer the steepest fall by rank.

Colombia's spot in fourth remains intact after their run to the Copa America quarter-final, in which they lost on penalties to Argentina. Brazil's quarter-final defeat to Paraguay, not to mention the group-stage loss to Los Cafeteros, sees them drop below the fifth-placed Netherlands. Uruguay will also be disappointed to plummet five places to 13th after their poor showing at the tournament.

June's Euro 2016 qualifiers have played havoc with the upper echelons of the rankings. Most noticeably, Romania (eighth) and Wales (10th) are now inside the top 10.

The former side are on a nine-match unbeaten streak stretching back to June 2014, while Wales have only lost to the Netherlands in their last 11. Two draws and a win over third-ranked Belgium in this time has played a major role in Chris Coleman's men rising to the elite spots.

Sports reporter Ian Abrahams and Wales' official FA Twitter account added further information:

Incidentally, Belize (118th) gained the most places with 37.

Other noticeable tidbits see Italy drop four places to 17th, Switzerland lose seven places to 18th and France slip 13 to 22nd. Didier Deschamps' men will hope to steadily improve ahead of hosting the European Championships next year.

Aside from the 2015 Gold Cup, attention turns to the club season now, with pre-season preparations taking place across Europe.

Next month's rankings are unlikely to produce many changes at the top as we await the first international break of the club schedule in September.
