Adam Schefter Says Fan Trolled Him About Fake NFL Trade While at Masters Without Phone
The rules prohibiting cellphones as the 2025 Masters Tournament led to a tense moment on Friday for ESPN insider Adam Schefter at Augusta National.
Schefter said he was at hole No. 6 during Friday's second round when a 20-year-old fan came running up to him.
"He goes, 'Did you hear about the humungous NFL trade?'" Schefter said at the 32:40 mark of the Adam Schefter Podcast. "And my heart dropped. ... And I'm like, 'No.'

"And he's like, 'I'm only kidding.'"
Schefter adds: "That wasn't that funny. I've got to be honest with you. ... He scared the crap out of me, to be honest. My heart dropped into my stomach when he said that."
Schefter said that going into the tournament, he was concerned about Augusta National's rules requiring attendees check their phones before entering grounds.
"I go into Thursday and Friday, petrified of what's going to happen," Schefter said. "Is Aaron Rodgers going to come back today while I'm on the golf course? Are the Tennessee Titans going to trade the No. 1 overall pick? Is Deion Sanders going to say that Shedeur's playing in this city or nowhere else?"
Former ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski has similarly previously spoken about the difficulty of parting from your phone when your career hinges on breaking news.
Schefter said that when he came back from Thursday's first round, he checked his phone to find 29 text messages but no huge news.
Luckily for Schefter, the biggest news of the weekend ended up not being Sanders, Rodgers or the Titans but rather McIlroy finally completing his career Grand Slam by defeating Justin Rose in the first hole of a sudden-death playoff at Augusta National on Sunday.
