After being traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers, star guard Luka Doncic accomplished a feat that hadn't been seen in a decade.

Per NBA insider Marc Stein, Doncic surpassed his teammate LeBron James and Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry as the leader in jersey sales for the 2024-25 season, becoming the first player since 2012-13 to outsell one of those two veteran superstars. He's also the first international player ever to have the highest-selling jersey in the NBA.

The decision by the Mavs to trade Doncic sent shockwaves throughout the NBA but created a profitable situation for the league. Stein added that the NBA said jersey sales from its online store were up 21 percent year-over-year since the Feb. 6 trade deadline, and that increase was "primarily driven by Doncic's trade to the Lakers." With the No. 1 and No. 3 leaders on its roster in Doncic and James, Los Angeles topped the league in merchandise sales.

Doncic's arrival to Hollywood helped the Lakers surge to a third-place finish in the Western Conference at 50-32. In his 28 games wearing the Purple & Gold, he averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.6 steals. Los Angeles will open the postseason on Saturday against the sixth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves.

By acquiring Doncic, the Lakers now have one of the brightest futures in the entire NBA. The 26-year-old is now the heir apparent to James when he decides to end his legendary career, and he will join the pantheon of Lakers superstars following in the footsteps of Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal and many more.

Doncic's star power at the international level will bring a new dimension to Los Angeles over the next few years. If he manages to lead the franchise back to the mountaintop by winning an NBA championship, his popularity will skyrocket even further.
