Angels' Mike Trout Meets Astros Fan Who Ripped Foul Ball Out of Glove in Viral Video

Mike Trout seemingly made up with the Houston Astros fan who took a foul ball out of his glove during the Los Angeles Angels' 4-1 win on Saturday at Daikin Park.

Trout signed the ball involved in the play for the son of the Astros fan, identified by The Athletic's Sam Blum as Jared Whalen, after the game.

Trout originally argued for a fan interference call after the ball was grabbed out of his glove as he reached into the stands in an attempt to catch a hit into foul territory by Houston's Yainer Diaz in the second inning.

The play was ruled a foul ball, and the fan and his son were escorted from their seats by security.

Trout is playing this season at right field after spending most of his prior 14 seasons at center field as part of the Angels' efforts to keep him healthy.

“I learn new things every single day. Once I go into the stands, it's free game," Trout said after the game, per MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger. "Being in right field, it’s a little different. In center, I don’t really get that play."

Trout meanwhile said about the fan and his son: “They were really apologetic. It didn't really affect the game. I’ve got kids myself and that kid was probably nine years old.

"Just seeing them after the game, they were really nice people. They had to move and they probably spent hard-earned money on those tickets.”

Whalen meanwhile told Blum that he had reacted because the ball was coming toward his son's face.

“I was more looking at the ball coming for my son’s face,” Whalen said, per Blum. “I made sure I wasn’t in the field of play. I apologized, and (Trout) nodded his head and we’re good, I think.”

Whalen told Blum he saw Saturday's incident as different from the fan interference that took place in Game 4 of the 2024 World Series, when New York Yankees fan Austin Capobianco grabbed Mookie Betts' glove amid an attempt to catch a foul ball. Capobianco was indefinitely banned from MLB stadiums following the incident.
