Luka Doncic, Patrick Mahomes Embrace on Video After Lakers' Win vs. Mavs in Dallas
Following the Los Angeles Lakers' 112-97 road win over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night, Luka Dončić shared an on-court embrace with Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes, who is originally from Tyler, Texas, is a longtime Mavs fan, so he closely followed Dončić's seven seasons in Dallas before he was shockingly traded to the Lakers in February.
The Lakers and Mavericks dropped a bombshell that nobody saw coming two months ago when they agreed to a deal that sent Dončić, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to Dallas in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick.
Mahomes' knee-jerk reaction to the trade was similar to that of most Mavs fans, as he posted on X after the news broke that he was "sick" over it:
During Super Bowl LIX Opening Night, Mahomes expanded on his thoughts about the trade, telling reporters:
"It's tough. You know, I've watched Luka since he was 18 years old. I remember going to a practice and it was Dirk [Nowitzki] and Luka, and seeing his maturation and how great of a basketball player he's become, it's been fun to watch. As a Dallas fan, it hurts me."
Wednesday marked Dončić's first game back in Dallas since the trade that ended his seven-year tenure with the Mavericks.
Dončić was on top of his game, as he led all scorers with 45 points on 16-of-28 shooting to go along with eight rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Mavs fans gave Dončić an ovation when he left the court for the final time late in the fourth quarter, which was an exclamation point of sorts on their "Fire Nico" chants in reference to Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison.
With the win, the Lakers improved to 49-31 season, giving them a one-game lead for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.
The Mavericks still have a chance to make the playoffs since they have clinched a spot in the postseason play-in tournament, but with a 38-42 record, the vibes around the team are less than ideal.
It is abundantly clear that Luka is still beloved in Dallas, as both the fanbase as a whole and Mahomes showed their appreciation for him on Wednesday.
