Assessing NBA Draft 2025 Scouting Reports on Top Stars from Experts' Mock Draft

Zach BuckleyApr 7, 2025

The 2024-25 NBA season hasn't reached its final stop yet, but for a handful of teams, things went off the track a while ago.

For those unfortunate franchises, they're now focused on the hope that the 2025 NBA draft will deliver the kind of high-end talent that ensures future wreckages are avoided.

They might be in luck, too, since several top prospects project to be true difference-makers at this level.

We'll examine three of those blue-chip ballers here while leaning on expert mocks to find and evaluate their scouting reports on these future pros.

VJ Edgecombe, SG/SF, Baylor

1 of 3
Baylor v Duke

There is an undeniable ferocity to VJ Edgecombe's game. Just ask Joe Few, who found himself on the receiving end of one of Edgecombe's (and the college hoops world's) most impressive highlight flushes all season.

Edgecombe offers more than bounce, but it still feels right to open his scouting report with a word on his explosive athleticism. Both B/R's Jonathan Wasserman and The Athletic's Sam Vecenie made links between Edgecombe and two-time All-Star Victor Oladipo, who had enough hops to twice participate in the Slam Dunk Contest.

As for the rest of Edgecombe's game, there's plenty else to like. Wasserman touched on Edgecombe's "shotmaking, unselfish nature and defensive activity" while noting teams could prefer him over fellow top prospect Ace Bailey based on the perception that Edgecombe is "the safer, more well-rounded prospect."

Granted, safety isn't exactly the most exciting selling point when discussing an early draft pick, but it still matters. And it might actually be coveted if teams sense Edgecombe offers both an elevated floor and a high ceiling, a notion easy to buy for those who believe he'll continue to improve as an on-ball scorer.

Dylan Harper, PG/SG, Rutgers

2 of 3
USC v Rutgers

Most mock drafts you'll find start the same way: with Cooper Flagg going No. 1 and Dylan Harper landing right behind at No. 2.

And it's very possible front offices view him as being closer to Flagg than he is to the prospects jostling to go No. 3.

Harper is a 6'6" lead guard who's comfortable and capable serving as a go-to scorer. He averaged an efficient 19.4 points per game this season and could've tallied more than his nightly 4.0 assists if he had more scoring support and wasn't as needed for his own point production.

As Vecenie noted, Harper's "pull-up jumper really remains the one question mark." Harper ran hot and cold from three this season, culminating in an underwhelming 33.3 percent conversion rate from distance. That's probably the reason he isn't quite challenging Flagg for the top spot, but Harper's downhill attacking, point-of-attack defense and next-level finishing package have all seemingly cemented him as the second-best prospect in the class.

Cooper Flagg, PF, Duke

3 of 3
NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament - Final Four - San Antonio

Cooper Flagg was the buzziest prospect heading into this college season, and he still found a way to live up to the hype.

His stat sheet sent up countless testimonies to his versatility and efficiency. His average outing included 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.8 stocks (steals plus blocks). He also shot an impressive 48.1 percent from the field while canning 38.5 percent of his long-range looks and 84 percent of his free throws.

That body of work allowed Flagg to become just the fourth freshman to win the Naismith Men's College Player of the Year Award, joining Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis and Zion Williamson. Flagg's film, meanwhile, earned him pro comparisons from Wasserman to Atlanta Hawks rising star Jalen Johnson and Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett.

Vecenie called Flagg "more methodical and well-rounded in his dominance" than Williamson, while adding that "what stands out is his elite level of competitiveness." Flagg looks like a do-it-all defender who might wear the same label on offense if his shooting sustains. He's a mismatch waiting to happen and clearly the top prospect in this draft.
