Marcus Smart Says Fan 'Crossed the Line' in Exchange on Video During Wizards-Celtics
Marcus Smart had some of the best years of his career with the Boston Celtics from 2014 to 2023, but he didn't get a warm welcome from every fan at TD Garden on Sunday.
As Smart's Washington Wizards took on the Celtics, the guard got into a shouting match with a fan that he said took things too far.

"He just crossed the line. We all know, I don't do line crossing," Smart said after the loss, per ESPN. "You never want to see that, especially for a guy who's coming back and has given the city everything he has."
Smart did not play on Sunday as the last-place Wizards lost to the Celtics 124-90, but a fan and Smart got into it in the fourth quarter before Smart pointed out the fan to security and had him removed "before it escalated more than what it was."
Aside from the heated interaction with the fan, it was mostly a positive return for Smart. He received "We want Marcus!" chants during the game and said afterward that his return to Boston was special.
"Flashbacks, baby," Smart said. "The love is always there. From both sides—myself and the fans, the city. It's definitely emotional coming back and you try to hold it back. But I love it. I love every last bit of it. I'm a part of the city—nine years. A kid to a young man."
The Celtics drafted Smart sixth overall in 2014, and he became a key piece in Boston's rebuild following the Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen era. In his time with the Celtics, the team reached the Eastern Conference Finals six times and made the NBA Finals in 2022.
Boston ultimately moved on from Smart after the 2023 season, sending him to Memphis in the trade that brought Kristaps Porziņģis to the Celtics and helped lead to a championship last year. The Grizzlies traded Smart to Washington at the deadline in February.
