2025 NBA Free Agents Rumors and Predictions Based on Late-season Buzz

Erik BeastonApr 6, 2025

The eyes of the NBA world may be the upcoming playoffs but front office officials are already looking toward the off-season and the high-profile free agents that may (or may not) be available.

Several are expected to exercise their player options, opting out to explore potential big-money deals. Do their current teams have the finances to bring them back or will talented big men, multi-time champions, and young stars just hitting their primes take their talents elsewhere?

Find out with this look at recent insider chatter.

Naz Reid, Julius Randle Expected Back in Minnesota

1 of 3
Phoenix Suns v Minnesota Timberwolves

Naz Reid is one of the better big men in the NBA and Julius Randle has fit in nicely in Minnesota despite a bumpy start to his run there. According to ESPN's Tim Bontemps, both are expected to remain with the Timberwolves, regardless of whether they exercise their player option in 2025.

"The general belief from sources around the league on both Reid and Randle is that they'll be back in Minnesota next season, though what form that takes is unclear. Both could potentially opt into their contracts and extend (Reid has a $15 million player option, while Randle's is $29 million) or opt out and sign new deals," the NBA insider wrote.

It is no surprise that Minnesota, currently the sixth seed in the Western Conference, would want to hold onto both players. Reid, the reigning NBA Sixth Man of the Year, has averaged 14.3 points per game, six rebounds, and 2.3 assists while shooting 46.1 percent from the floor and 38.3 from beyond the arc. He also proved himself an effective starter in place for the injured Rudy Gobert earlier, stating his case for more of a role in the starting lineup moving forward.

After a so-so post-trade start to his career in Minnesota, Randle has averaged 18.7 points, seven rebounds, and 4.7 assists. His 48 percent from the floor is his most since his 2018-19 campaign with New Orleans.

Bringing both players back next season to continue the organization's upward momentum in the hunt for a Western Conference and, ultimately, NBA championship will be among the key tasks for the front office this off-season, regardless of how it is accomplished.

Prediction: The T'Wolves bring back Randle, Reid, with the latter getting the bigger of the two deals

Indiana Wants Myles Turner Back

2 of 3
Utah Jazz v Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers face a conundrum with Myles Turner heading into the postseason.

ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported that "Team sources told me the Pacers absolutely want to keep Turner, who is closing in on his 700th game for the franchise. But Indiana has to manage a cash crunch."

The team will have roughly $22 million in cap space according to the NBA insider, but Turner is expected to fetch more than that as he is already currently paid $19 million.

"The Pacers haven't paid the luxury tax since 2005, and there are no plans to go into it next season, sources said," Windhorst wrote.

Turner is nearing his 700th game with the Pacers, an impressive feat of longevity with one team. He is also developing the toughness and on-court aggression that was missing from his game. With 15.6 points in 30.4 minutes and 48.2 percent shooting from the floor, it is no wonder that team officials want to retain their big man.

Whether than make it happen financially is the question. If so, it likely means restructuring other deals or letting other players walk this off-season as it attempts to retain its two-decade-long streak of slotting in under the salary cap apron.

Prediction: The Pacers get a deal done, but not without costing a few depth players in the process

Could LeBron James Leave Los Angeles

3 of 3
Lakers vs Pelicans in Los Angeles, CA

Technically, yes. Realistically, no.

Brett Siegel of Clutch Points reported that "LeBron will likely opt out of his $50.6 million player option, but he is not expected to leave Los Angeles." He continued, "This has been James' strategy through the years, signing those unique ‘1+1' contracts which give him and the Lakers flexibility to adjust their cap numbers accordingly."

It is a strategy that has worked well for both sides, with James not having to commit long-term as he nears the end of his playing career while the Lakers have that necessary flexibility to make moves that strengthen the team amid championship aspirations.

Luka Dončić has renewed expectations in Hollywood of a championship and, as James continues to chase his next championship, any discount he is willing to provide the team only heightens the possibility of signing key players in important depth roles to keep the organization moving forward.

That James himself is averaging 24.6 points, eight rebounds, 8.4 assists, and shooting 51.2 percent from the floor at age 40 only enhances the reasoning for Lakers officials to be all-too-willing to retain his services, regardless of how he approaches his contractual situation.

He will get another big deal, probably just north of the $56 million owed to him in he decided to opt in, and will once again be at the center of the Lakers' attempts to bring a championship back to Los Angeles for the first time since the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

Prediction: The King is back in 2025, with a new one-year deal and a piece here or there to make a legitimate championship run possible
