Stone Cold Stunner: Top 25 Recap

Ron JohnsonSep 30, 2007

Pandora's Box is officially open. For the first time since 2003, in one week, five Top 10 teams stumbled and fumbled their way into the loss column. Here's the rundown of the weekend's jaw droppers.

#1 USC 27, Washington 24

John David Booty didn't hear about Florida or Oklahoma, but he did hear  the Trojans were supposed to have a close one against Washington. They did. Booty threw for 237 yards and Stafon Johnson and Chauncey Washington each had a score as the Trojans survived a Northwest swing against the Huskies. Despite three turnovers, 16 penalties, a missed field goal, and a blocked punt, USC still staved off an upset-minded Huskies team.

#2 LSU 34, Tulane 9

The Bayou Bengals haven't faced strong competition this season. With the exception of their win over South Carolina, LSU has been handed the top spot. If they intend on claiming that prize, they might want to remember who is coming to town next weekend. In a division where pretenders are turning into contenders, LSU could be in for trouble when the angry Gators come to town. By the way, LSU beat Tulane with 24 unanswered second-half points.

Colorado 27, #3 Oklahoma 24

Surprise, surprise. Did someone forget to tell Bob Stoops that he was in Folsom Prison?

In Folsom, anything is possible.

On Saturday, Kevin Eberhart proved that by booting a 45-yard field goal as time expired. The Colorado Buffaloes not only improved to 3-2, but opened Big XII conference play with a huge win over the high scoring Oklahoma Sooners. Sam Bradford only threw for 119 yards and two picks, while his counterpart, Cody Hawkins, threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns.

Auburn 20, #4 Florida 17

The upsets continued on Saturday night as Wes Byrum played Jason Elam and booted the Tigers to victory with a 43-yard game winning field goal. For the second consectutive year, Auburn handed Florida their first loss of the season. The loss doesn't kill Florida's national championship hopes, but they have to regroup quickly to prepare for LSU. A win next weekend will put them back in the Top 3. A loss might knock them out of a BCS Bowl.

#18 South Florida 21, #5 West Virginia 13

On Friday night the South Florida Bulls showed they are for real. The Bulls not only gored West Virginia, but they also did several Big East teams a favor by injuring Pat White. Matt Grothe threw for 135 yards and a touchdown as the Bulls sent the Mountaineers home with a loss and improved their chances of a Top 10 ranking come Wednesday.

#6 California 31, #11 Oregon 24

The Ducks did almost everything right on the final drive of the game. They almost upset another powerhouse. They almost moved into the Top 10. They almost won. But in this day and age, almost doesn't win games.

Cameron Colvin fell one yard short and even fumbled in the end zone to secure the victory...for the Golden Bears! DeSean Jackson had 11 catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns while Justin Forsett ran for 101 yards and two more touchdowns to help the Bears beat the Ducks in Eugene.

Kansas State 41, #7 Texas 21

The Red River Shootout doesn't have the same meaning after Oklahoma's loss. The last time the Longhorns started 0-1 in conference play was in 1998 (when they lost to Kansas State). The last time the Horns had a loss this bad at home was in 1999 (when they lost to Kansas State). So it was only fitting that on the last Saturday of September, the foundation of the Big XII was rocked massively. Two kick returns and an interception return highlighted the Wildcats' pounding of the Longhorns.

#8 Ohio State 30, Minnesota 7

Chris Wells ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns while the Buckeyes remained strong en route to showdowns with the Badgers, Nittany Lions, and Wolverines to end their season.

#9 Wisconsin 37, Michigan State 34

If P.J. Hill didn't get the job done, the Badgers go home with a loss. Simple enough assumption, right? But not entirely true.

Hill ran for 155 yards and two touchdowns while the defense staved off a field goal and a fourth down stand late in the fourth quarter to survive...again.

Here's my two cents on the Badgers: Wisconsin loses one game in October and another one in November. Take your pick on who beats them. The luck has run dry in Madison.

Maryland 34, #10 Rutgers 24

Replacement players helped the ACC pick up not one but two wins on Saturday. Chris Turner marched down the field three times in the second half, and Keon Lattimore ran for 124 yards and a touchdown as Maryland handed the Scarlet Knights their first loss of the season.
