Brock Purdy Talks Being 'Overlooked' During NFL Career Amid 49ers Contract Rumors
Brock Purdy has made a name for himself as a quarterback capable of leading a team to the playoffs, but the San Francisco 49ers star hasn't always received the same praise he gets now.
On the Built 4 More podcast, Purdy discussed being overlooked for most of his football career.
“My whole story has been just being overlooked, not good enough,” Purdy said (h/t Pro Football Talk's Charean Williams). “And for me, deep down inside, I’m like, ‘I know I can play and compete at this level, this level, this level.’ And so, high school, it was the case. And then I became a starter, and we went to the state championship, all that. But I got recruited very late.

“And then all of a sudden, I barely get an offer at the end, and I go to Iowa State. And then I was the third-string guy going into that. Overlooked. And then I became the starter halfway through that season, and then for four more years. And then I got drafted last. So, all these people tell me that you’re not going to be good enough, but deep down inside, this whole time, I’m like, ‘Just wait until I get an opportunity to compete.”
Coming out of high school, Purdy was listed as a 3-star recruit by 247Sports Composite, committing to Iowa State. Despite a solid collegiate career, Purdy didn't get much buzz heading into the draft, but the Niners ended up picking him up in the seventh round in 2022.
Purdy didn't begin his rookie season as the starter, but took over after Jimmy Garoppolo fractured his foot in Week 13. Purdy ended up leading San Francisco to the NFC Championship game and took the 49ers to the Super Bowl a year later.
Now Purdy is eligible for a contract extension and will be rewarded after years of being overlooked.
