Yankees Fan Customizes Juan Soto Jersey to Say 'Sellout' in MLB Opening Day Photo
It appears that some fans still aren't over star outfielder Juan Soto leaving the New York Yankees to move crosstown and join the New York Mets.
During the Yankees' Opening Day game against the Milwaukee Brewers, a fan was seen with a Soto jersey that had his name taped over to instead read "Sellout."
Soto spent the 2024 season with the Yankees after being acquired in a trade with the San Diego Padres, helping to lead them to their first World Series appearance since 2009. However, the team fell short against the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games, and Soto became a free agent on a sour note.
The Mets managed to pry Soto away from the Yankees by signing him to a monster 15-year, $765 million contract, marking the largest deal in sports history.
"It was a lot of meetings, a lot of back and forth looking at the teams," Soto told ESPN's Jeff Passan about his process in free agency. "What is going to be the best? Who's going to be at the top for the next 15 years? Who's going to be willing to spend money after five, six, seven, 10 years?"
Soto joined a Mets team that made a surprising run to the NLCS and pushed the Dodgers to six games before being eliminated. He could be the missing piece to help the team win its first World Series since 1986.
Meanwhile, the Yankees lost a slew of key players to injuries before the start of the 2025 season. Veteran slugger Giancarlo Stanton is sidelined indefinitely with discomfort in both his elbows, and ace Gerrit Cole is out for the year due to Tommy John surgery.
These setbacks will make it even more difficult for Yankees fans to watch the Mets if Soto fulfills his goal of leading the team to a World Series title.
