Andy Murray vs. Vasek Pospisil: Score and Reaction from 2015 Wimbledon

Tim DanielsJul 8, 2015

Andy Murray advanced to the semifinals of the 2015 Wimbledon Championships with a straight-sets victory (6-4, 7-5, 6-4) over Vasek Pospisil on Wednesday. He'll face No. 2 seed Roger Federer for a spot in the championship match.

Murray was pushed to four sets in each of the previous two rounds by Andreas Seppi and Ivo Karlovic. He put together a more comprehensive performance against Pospisil, who was the only unseeded player to reach the quarterfinals in the men's draw.

There were questions about how the 25-year-old Canadian would perform after playing a lot of tennis in the event, both in singles and doubles. The 2013 Wimbledon champ said he wasn't going to let that change his outlook, as noted by Darren Boyle of the Daily Mail.

"He may also be a little bit fatigued, but then again he's played so much tennis that he's going to be comfortable in the conditions and in a good rhythm," Murray said. "If he is tired I'll obviously try to capitalise on that, but I won't bank on it."

Murray came out firing, securing an early break and a 3-1 edge before the rain caused a delay. The players were briefed beforehand that a shower might pass through, so it shouldn't have come as a surprise, per Mark Masters of TSN:

The brief respite seemingly allowed the underdog to settle in as he was far more effective on serve afterward. He wasn't unable to get the break back, however, as Murray served out the opening set without facing a break point.

Among the celebrities on hand for the match were the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as highlighted by Daily Record Sport:

Pospisil did elevate his level of play as the set went on, which Damien Cox of Sportsnet explained is a positive sign in the bigger picture:

The rain returned with the second set on serve at 4-3 in favor of the Canadian. Pospisil was starting to make more inroads on the Murray serve but still hadn't generated a break point.

James Keith of Get West London posed the same question many started asking:

Eventually, the tournament organizers decided to make it an indoor match, and the Wimbledon Roof parody account celebrated:

This time it was Murray who seemed to benefit from the wait. He was able to generate a look at 30-30 on Pospisil's serve in the 11th game and then received a little help from the chair umpire, who picked a questionable moment to call a time violation.

Christopher Clarey of the New York Times didn't approve of the decision:

Murray proceeded to get the break and then closed out the second set on serve. While rules should be enforced, both players were moving at a leisurely pace between points throughout the match, so making a call at that crucial point is hard to comprehend.

It was more of the same in the third set. Although there were plenty of extended rallies and the play was generally competitive, Pospisil simply didn't have enough firepower on the return to seriously push the No. 3 seed. Perhaps that's where the fatigue did come into play.

The 56th-ranked player in the world finally generated a break point in the final game, but Murray was able to battle back to finish off the match. The efficient match is exactly what he needed ahead of what will be two hard-fought encounters if he's going to win the title.

Wimbledon showcased the scene after Murray's triumph:

ESPN Stats & Info spotlighted another milestone for the Scot:

As mentioned, Murray moves on to face Federer in the semifinals. It marks the 24th career meeting between the "Big Four" members. Federer holds a slight 12-11 advantage after winning the last three encounters, but it's their first clash of 2015.

Both superstars are playing at an incredibly high level on serve right now. In turn, the match will likely be decided by which player is able to take better advantage of the few break opportunities that arise and how they play the clutch points in any tiebreakers.

A ticket to the Wimbledon final awaits the winning player.
