Ice Cube's BIG3 Unveils New Teams, Coaches for 2025 Schedule Beginning June 14
Eight city-based teams will compete for the 2025 BIG3 title.
The BIG3 announced the new slate of competitors ahead of the start of the 2025 season on June 14.
The 2024 BIG3 season featured 12 teams playing without home cities.
The BIG3 is heading into its eighth season. The 3-on-3 league was founded in 2017 by Ice Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz.
The new league format will feature teams based in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami and the Washington D.C. metro area.
The coaching roster features five Basketball Hall of Famers in Gary Payton (Boston Ball Hogs), Nancy Lieberman (Dallas Power), George Gervin (Detroit Amplifiers), Calvin Murphy (Houston Rig Hands) and Michael Cooper (Miami 305.)
Two former NBA players with BIG3 experience, Stephen Jackson (DMV Trilogy) and Nick Young (Los Angeles Riot), will also coach teams. The coach for the Chicago Triplets has yet to be announced.
Cube said in a statement that transitioning to city-based teams represents a "landmark moment" for BIG3.
"Transitioning to a full city-based model for this season is another marker of the league's continued exponential growth," Cube said.
Cube added that the BIG3 hopes to add four expansion teams ahead of the 2026 season.
That expansion could potentially bring back some former BIG3 team names not represented in the 2025 league, including the reigning champion Bivouac. Kwatinetz said he hoped to see some of these team names "make a comeback in the future."
The BIG3's expansion plans come on the heels of the first season of Unrivaled, a women's 3-on-3 league featuring WNBA stars. Similarly to early BIG3 seasons, the inaugural six Unrivaled teams are unconnected to geographic locations, although league representatives said branding was designed with potential relocation in mind.
The full BIG3 2025 season schedule will be released next week.
