Wimbledon 2015: Predictions for Top Singles Stars of Wednesday's Draw Schedule

Steven CookJul 7, 2015

The stars are aligned at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships for Wednesday, as the top four seeds in the men's draw are all set to face quarterfinal competition on the road to second-week glory at the All England Club.

Only two of the top eight seeds entered the women's quarterfinal still intact, but the same can't be said on the men's side. All four top seeds navigated through the opening week without much trouble, and top-seeded Novak Djokovic is the only one to be taken to a full five sets.

That being said, they'll face a serious step up in competition Wednesday against opponents worthy of vying for an exclusive spot in Wimbledon's final four. They can rely on their sheer skill in the early rounds, but pinpointing their opponents' biggest weaknesses will be key from here on out.

Take a look below at who the top stars are facing Wednesday and how they might do.

No. 1 Novak Djokovic vs. No. 9 Marin Cilic

While the other seven quarterfinalists took care of business Monday, Djokovic was the only one to have his round-of-16 affair spill over into Tuesday. He'll hope that doesn't become a factor in Wednesday's meeting with the big-hitting Cilic.

From John Isner to Ivo Karlovic and more, there are plenty of powerful service men around who simply don't have the all-around game to make it count. Cilic isn't one of them, as he proved with his amazing 2014 U.S. Open title run.

He noted his excitement for the next challenges on Twitter, as if to suggest there will be more than one:

Of course, Cilic will have to break a disappointing run of history in his career in order to stay alive for one more match. He's a ghastly 0-12 all time against the top-seeded Serbian but had Djokovic on the ropes the last time they faced at Wimbledon, per ESPN Stats & Info:

The 6'6" Cilic has stepped up his game as the tournament's second week has unfolded, but he undoubtedly has his work cut out for him. In his eighth Wimbledon, this is the furthest he's advanced.

What's more, Cilic hasn't been the dominant player that we saw at Flushing Meadows last year as of late. He's played 14 of a possible 15 sets in his last three matches, which means the tired legs should be on Cilic's side more so than Djokovic.

Djokovic knows he'll be in trouble if Cilic builds confidence early with his serve. For that reason, expect him to take control early and not look back, winning in three tight sets.

Prediction: Djokovic wins, 6-4, 7-5, 7-6

No. 3 Andy Murray vs. Vasek Pospisil

Wimbledon crowd favorite Andy Murray kicks things off on the Centre Court for quarterfinal Wednesday, facing the lone Cinderella left in the draw in Canada's Vasek Pospisil.

For the seventh straight year, Murray advanced through the first four matches at Wimbledon without much issue and punched his ticket to the final eight. He's three sets away from a sixth consecutive semifinal appearance but will have to go through a surging talent.

The No. 54 singles player has dazzled, emerging from a five-set Round 1 match against Vincent Millot to knock off three more contenders. In the process, though, he's logged more than double the court time as Murray, shown by Mark Masters of TSN:

Of course, Pospisil has been out of the doubles tournament since he and Jack Sock were eliminated Monday and has been putting his full focus on Murray over the last 48 hours or so. But it takes much more than some extra preparation to take down Murray.

Murray's dropped two sets thus far at Wimbledon, but both seemed to be a lack of his execution as much as his opponent's doing. Otherwise, he's been fearless on the grass courts and more than comfortable chasing down returns.

Pospisil is 0-3 all time against Murray and has failed to win a set in the process. His all-around prominence allowed him to edge past his opening four opponents, but that's exactly how Murray will take it to him Wednesday.

Prediction: Murray wins, 6-2, 6-4, 7-5

No. 2 Roger Federer vs. No. 12 Gilles Simon

With how easily Roger Federer is dispatching opponents at Wimbledon, viewers are taken back to a time when he used to dominate the second week of play at the All England Club. He'll have a chance to put an 18th Grand Slam title in focus Wednesday against 12th-seeded Gilles Simon.

While many of the top seeds have had a tough time getting past opponents in the last few rounds, Federer just keeps on cruising. He's dropped just one set through his four matches and has hit just 20 unforced errors in his last two matches combined.

Dominant service has been a key to Federer's success so far, as Wimbledon showed:

With that said, Federer faces an opponent in Simon that could be his toughest yet. He played 13 of 15 sets in his first three matches but is peaking after a fourth-round drubbing of sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych. Simon only dropped seven games in that match.

Federer has more reason to fear Simon, as he's topped the Swiss legend twice. But those came in their first two meetings, and Federer is 5-0 in the meetings since, which includes two at Grand Slams.

In those matches, however, Federer was taken to five sets each time. The same can be expected as Simon continues to build off of the success he found in the opening week, but he'll come up just short against Federer.

Prediction: Federer wins, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4
