Cam Johnson on Being In NBA Trade Deadline Rumors: 'Not as Fun as It Is Watching'
When it comes to the NBA trade deadline, Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson would much prefer to be a spectator.
"(It's) probably not as fun as it is watching," he said about the usual deadline frenzy to The Athletic's Jared Weiss. "Everybody, you want to know what's going on in life. Uncertainty can be difficult."
The Phoenix Suns shipped Johnson to Brooklyn ahead of the 2023 deadline as part of the Kevin Durant trade. Since then, he has been the subject of steady rumors with the 23-46 Nets in the midst of a rebuild.
The 29-year-old told Weiss he has learned to handle the discourse with a sense of remove.
"There's so much to focus on in our own program in Brooklyn that if a trade happens, it happens,” he said. “If it doesn't, it doesn't."
Johnson is setting career highs in scoring (18.9 points) and field-goal percentage (47.6) this season. His size (6'8") and floor-spacing ability (39.3 percent on three-pointers across six years) make him an attractive target for any team with playoff aspirations.
In addition, the $43 million Johnson makes over the next two seasons only looks better with salaries soaring across the NBA.
Once the summer arrives, there's a good chance the rumor mill will spark back up for the 29-year-old. His value will be too high for general manager Sean Marks to totally ignore any outside interest.
For now, Johnson knows his future is secure for at least another few months.
