NBA Draft 2025 Rumors: Team Question Tre Johnson's 'Shot Selection and Tendencies'

Adam WellsMar 18, 2025

Texas star Tre Johnson is entering the NCAA tournament as one of the top NBA draft prospects, but there are some concerns about how high his ceiling is going to be at the next level.

Per ESPN's Jeremy Woo, there are questions from NBA teams about Johnson's "shot selection and tendencies" on the court that could impact his draft stock.

Even with those concerns, Woo did note there has been "more positive than negative" play from Johnson this season to suggest his long-term outlook is very promising.

Any potential questions that NBA teams might have don't seem to be knocking Johnson down too far right now.

B/R NBA draft analyst Jonathan Wasserman projected Johnson to be the sixth overall pick to the Philadelphia 76ers in his most recent mock that dropped on Tuesday.

Wasserman specifically cited Johnson's "incredible shotmaking and polished footwork for self-creation" as reasons for teams to feel certain they are at least getting a capable NBA player.

Johnson was a 5-star prospect and No. 5 overall player in the loaded 2024 recruiting class, per 247Sports' composite rankings. The only players ahead of him were Cooper Flagg, Ace Bailey, Dylan Harper and V.J. Edgecombe.

Going back to Wasserman's mock draft, all four of those players are projected to be selected before Johnson. The fifth pick is Maryland's Derik Queen, who was ranked as the No. 12 recruit last year.

Johnson has been the driving force on offense for the Longhorns this season. He's averaging 19.8 points on 39.2 percent three-point shooting and was named SEC Freshman of the Year.

There have been some concerning signs with Johnson's performance down the stretch in the regular season and into the conference tournament. He went 0-of-14 from the field in Texas' 76-72 loss to Oklahoma in the regular-season finale against Oklahoma.

Even though the Longhorns did advance to the SEC tournament quarterfinals before losing to Tennessee, Johnson shot 35.4 percent from the field in three games.

Texas doesn't have a lot of high-level scorers around Johnson, which is making his job that much more difficult. He can quiet some of the concerns about his shot selection with a strong performance in the NCAA tournament.

The Longhorns snuck into the field as a No. 11 seed and will play in the First Four against Xavier on Wednesday, with the winner advancing to take on Illinois.
