Nightmare Matchups for Projected 2025 NBA Playoff Teams

Greg SwartzMar 15, 2025

Every NBA playoff team has at least one opponent they'd like to avoid for a number of reasons. This could stem from poor play during head-to-head meetings this season, tough individual matchups, previous playoff history or a number of different X-factors.

Some of these selections will be obvious (no one will want to play the Oklahoma City Thunder or Cleveland Cavaliers) while others may surprise you (see Atlanta Hawks, Houston Rockets).

Projected playoff teams will be provided by B/R's recent bracket predictions, which are based on current record, remaining strength of schedule, key players out due to injury and a number of other areas.

These are the nightmare opponents all 16 projected postseason teams should want to stay away from.

East No. 1: Cleveland Cavaliers

1 of 16
Cleveland Cavaliers v Oklahoma City Thunder

Nightmare Matchup: Oklahoma City Thunder

Season Record Against: 1-1

Net Rating Against: minus-8.1

The 55-10 Cleveland Cavaliers only possess a losing record against one Eastern Conference team this season (Atlanta Hawks, 1-2), yet those contests came before the Cavs traded for the Hawks' second-leading scorer in De'Andre Hunter.

Cleveland has also split their season series with the Boston Celtics (2-2) and are a perfect 2-0 against the New York Knicks, the other top teams in the East.

Instead, the Cavaliers should only fear the mighty Thunder, the team that delivered their worst loss of the season to date, a 134-114 drubbing on Jan. 16 where Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley combined to score 13 points.

Should the Cavs be fortunate enough to make it out of the East, they should hope any other team outside of OKC advances from the West.

East No. 2: Boston Celtics

2 of 16
The Thunder could be the most daunting of the Celtics' potential NBA Finals opponents. OKC showed why on Wednesday.

Nightmare Matchup: Oklahoma City Thunder

Season Record Against: 0-2

Net Rating Against: minus-8.7

Much like the Cleveland Cavaliers, there's no one in the East for the Boston Celtics to truly fear.

The Thunder are the only team that Boston has faced more than once this season and failed to beat, as OKC recently took down the Celtics in TD Garden with both Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (34 points) and Chet Holmgren (23 points, 15 rebounds) putting up big games.

With Boston 2-2 against the Cavs and an unblemished 3-0 vs. the New York Knicks and Milwaukee Bucks, the defending champions should be more concerned about a potential Finals matchup than anyone in their own conference.

East No. 3: New York Knicks

3 of 16
New York Knicks v Boston Celtics

Nightmare Matchup: Boston Celtics (or any top team)

Season Record Against: 0-3

Net Rating Against: minus-22.7

At 42-23 this season, the New York Knicks are the bullies of the East, meaning they only prey on the weak and would prefer to avoid picking on teams their own size.

An 0-7 collective record against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics and Oklahoma City Thunder proves as much, a figure Knicks fans are all too familiar with.

Boston has defeated New York by 63 total points in their three games, with every contest decided by 13 points or more. The Knicks should feel confident about any potential first-round matchup, although facing the Celtics in Round 2 looks inevitable.

East No. 4: Indiana Pacers

4 of 16
New York Knicks v Indiana Pacers

Nightmare Matchup: New York Knicks

Season Record Against: 1-2

Net Rating Against: minus-10.3

The Indiana Pacers are a very respectable 3-2 against the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics this season yet have struggled to match up against the Knicks.

Tyrese Haliburton had a horrific 0-of-8 shooting night for zero points and just five assists in a 25-point loss to the Knicks back in October, with New York possessing the wing talent (Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby) necessary to slow him down.

Karl-Anthony Towns' floor-spacing ability helps to pull premier shot-blocker Myles Turner out of the paint, allowing more room for the Knicks' offense to flourish.

East No. 5: Detroit Pistons

5 of 16
Cleveland Cavaliers v Detroit Pistons

Nightmare Matchup: Cleveland Cavaliers

Season Record Against: 0-3

Net Rating Against: minus-11.1

Detroit Pistons head coach JB Bickerstaff should not want to meet up with his former players this spring, as the Cavs are a perfect 3-0 (thanks to some Darius Garland magic) against him this season.

The Pistons' 9th-ranked defense is normally good enough to slow down most teams, yet this Cavaliers team has the hottest offense in the NBA and is still in contention for best in league history.

Detroit could feasibly win a first-round playoff series against teams like the Indiana Pacers or Milwaukee Bucks, but the Cavs possess too potent of a scoring attack for these young Pistons to counter.

East No. 6: Milwaukee Bucks

6 of 16
Milwaukee Bucks v New York Knicks

Nightmare Matchup: New York Knicks (among many)

Season Record Against: 0-2

Net Rating Against: minus-28.9

If you thought the Knicks' record against elite teams was bad, the Milwaukee Bucks would like you to hold their Miller Lites.

Milwaukee is 0-12 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Boston Celtics, Knicks and Memphis Grizzlies this season, although no team has pummeled them into the ground more than New York.

Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns combined for 74 points, 23 rebounds and 10 assists in a 140-106 victory on Jan. 12 while previously cruising to a 22-point victory back in November.

Unfortunately for Giannis Antetokounmpo and crew, the Knicks are their projected first-round matchup. An opening-series loss would make for a long offseason in Milwaukee.

East No. 7: Atlanta Hawks

7 of 16
Detroit Pistons v Atlanta Hawks

Nightmare Matchup: Detroit Pistons

Season Record Against: 1-3

Net Rating Against: minus-3.0

The Atlanta Hawks are the anti-New York Knicks or Milwaukee Bucks. They fear no giant yet seem to stumble against the middle of the pack.

Atlanta beat the Cavs in back-to-back games near the end of November and are 4-2 against Cleveland and the Boston Celtics this season.

Surprisingly, the Pistons are the only team the Hawks have lost to three times or more this season, as Cade Cunningham has torched Atlanta's suspect defense for 29.8 points, 12.5 assists and 7.5 rebounds in four games.

East No. 8: Orlando Magic

8 of 16
Cleveland Cavaliers v Orlando Magic

Nightmare Matchup: Cleveland Cavaliers

Season Record Against: 0-2

Net Rating Against: minus-26.3

Another playoff series between these two teams wouldn't carry the same fireworks as their 7-game battle from a year ago.

Orlando has already lost Jalen Suggs for the season and got smacked by 40 points the last time it played the Cavs.

In a battle of the No. 28 offense against the top scoring attack in the league, the Magic should hope to score a first-round meeting against the Boston Celtics (1-1 in the regular season) instead. In the end, however, it may only mean the difference between a five-game series or outright sweep.

West No. 1: Oklahoma City Thunder

9 of 16
Oklahoma City Thunder v Golden State Warriors

Nightmare Matchup: Golden State Warriors

Season Record Against: 1-2

Net Rating Against: minus-3.9

Zach Randolph would be proud of this Oklahoma City Thunder team.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and company have already proven themself against the NBA's best, with a 8-1 record against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks this season.

The Warriors, however, have proven to be a tough matchup. OKC's lone win in three meetings (a four-point victory in Nov.) came when Golden State was without Stephen Curry, and none of their contests have come since the Warriors traded for Jimmy Butler.

Given how well Golden State has played with Butler (12-1), OKC may very well have to face the Warriors in the second round.

West No. 2: Denver Nuggets

10 of 16
Minnesota Timberwolves v Denver Nuggets

Nightmare Matchup: Minnesota Timberwolves

Season Record Against: 0-3

Net Rating Against: minus-18.1

Following their 2023 title, the Denver Nuggets' hopes of a repeat were ruined by the Wolves a season ago in an epic seven-game, second-round series.

It's been another tough go against Anthony Edwards and company this season, even as the pieces around him have shifted. Rudy Gobert is still one of the best rim protectors and rebounders in all of basketball and Minnesota's physical style of play has them in the top-six in defense yet again.

Nikola Jokić is nearly putting up a 30-point triple-double every night, yet is averaging a far more modest 26.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 9.3 assists in three regular season meetings against the Wolves.

West No. 3: Los Angeles Lakers

11 of 16
Oklahoma City Thunder v Los Angeles Lakers - Emirates NBA Cup

Nightmare Matchup: Oklahoma City Thunder

Season Record Against: 0-1

Net Rating Against: minus-10.8

It's tough to get a feel for who the Los Angeles Lakers should want to avoid most this postseason given how different the roster looks now compared to how the year started. The Lakers still have two games remaining against the Thunder, which should help give us more answers.

For now, OKC looks like the toughest test. LeBron James struggled in their lone meeting to this point (12 points on 5-of-13 shooting) and the Thunder did a solid job against Luka Dončić in their second-round playoff series last year (24.7 points on 44.7 percent shooting).

Armed with talented wing defenders in Lu Dort, Alex Caruso and Cason Wallace and with a premier shot-blocker in the middle in Chet Holmgren, no team is better suited to defend the likes of Dončić and James than this Thunder squad.

West No. 4: Golden State Warriors

12 of 16
Golden State Warriors v Cleveland Cavaliers

Nightmare Matchup: Cleveland Cavaliers

Season Record Against: 0-2

Net Rating Against: minus-17.5

A Cavs-Golden State Warriors Finals? What year is it?!?

A championship rivalry that began exactly a decade ago could lead to a fifth meeting, one that these Warriors should now hope to avoid.

With no Kevin Durant or Klay Thompson and Draymond Green (35) and Stephen Curry (37) far past their primes of 2015-to-2018, Cleveland would be thrilled to try to get some revenge after getting demolished 8-1 in their last nine Finals games.

Cleveland's 41-point lead at halftime of their Nov. 8 win over the Warriors was the largest in franchise history and perhaps showed us just how bad these new Cavs (albeit still with Tristan Thompson) still want to beat Golden State.

West No. 5: Memphis Grizzlies

13 of 16
Oklahoma City Thunder v Memphis Grizzlies

Nightmare Matchup: Oklahoma City Thunder

Season Record Against: 0-3

Net Rating Against: minus-17.0

Nearly every team has struggled against the Thunder this season, but the Memphis Grizzlies have really struggled against the best of the West.

The Grizzlies have lost by 54 combined points in their three games, not once coming within single digits of a victory. All three meetings came without Chet Holmgren, one of the league's premier rim protectors, as well.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has torched Ja Morant and company (36.0 points, 7.7 assists on 51.4 percent shooting) and will continue to do so if this team meets in the second or third round.

West No. 6: Houston Rockets

14 of 16
Sacramento Kings v Houston Rockets

Nightmare Matchup: Sacramento Kings

Season Record Against: 0-3

Net Rating Against: minus-9.8

Even though the Houston Rockets have taken down the likes of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers (twice) and Memphis Grizzlies (three times), this franchise has yet to secure a victory this season against…the Kings?

Sacramento has continued to roll Houston whether it's had De'Aaron Fox or Zach LaVine in the backcourt, including withstanding an early injury to Domantas Sabonis in a March 1st win in Houston.

With the Rockets just a game out of the No. 2 seed in the West and the Kings almost certainly destined to finish in the play-in tournament, a first-round meeting is entirely possible.

West No. 7: Minnesota Timberwolves

15 of 16
Minnesota Timberwolves v Memphis Grizzlies

Nightmare Matchup: Memphis Grizzlies

Season Record Against: 0-2

Net Rating Against: minus-2.0

The Grizzlies have played the Minnesota Timberwolves tough this season, limiting the damage their two-leading scorers have done.

Anthony Edwards has shot just 37.5 percent overall and 23.1 percent from three in their pair of games while Julius Randle (11.5 points, 34.6 percent shooting overall, 8.3 percent from three) has been even worse.

With one of the best rim protectors in the NBA in Jaren Jackson Jr., Memphis will make Minnesota try and beat them with their outside game, something that hasn't worked to this point.

West No. 8: Sacramento Kings

16 of 16
Oklahoma City Thunder v Sacramento Kings

Nightmare Matchup: Oklahoma City Thunder

Season Record Against: 0-2

Net Rating Against: minus-26.4

The Sacramento Kings should have a goal of climbing to the Nos. 7 or 8 seed in the West in hopes of winning their first play-in game, allowing them to avoid OKC in the first round.

The Thunder have won by a combined 55 points in their two matchups, with Aaron Wiggins dropping 41 points (!!!)  in a Feb. 1st win while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander registered 37 points and 11 assists in the other.

Sacramento should feel far better about pulling off a first-round upset if it can face literally any other team that ultimately comes away with the No. 2 seed.
