LeBron James' Agent: 'Won't Put a Timetable' on Lakers Star's Return from Injury
Rich Paul, LeBron James' agent and Klutch Sports CEO, was noncommittal regarding a timeline for the Los Angeles Lakers star's return from a groin injury.
"I won't put a timetable on it. I'll let LeBron decide what's to be done there," Paul said during a Tuesday appearance on the Pat McAfee Show.
James exited the Lakers' 111-101 defeat at the hands of the Boston Celtics on Saturday due to the injury, leaving in the fourth quarter without returning.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding a possible recovery schedule, James wasn't concerned with the issue immediately after the game.
“Not much concern,” James said, per Kyle Hightower of the Associated Press. “Obviously, I’m day-to-day. I’ll look at it each day and see if it gets better, and take the proper measures to see what I need to do moving forward.”
“I’ve been there before and I know what type of injury we’re dealing with," he added.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported Sunday that the NBA's all-time leading scorer was expected to miss "at least" one to two weeks with the groin strain.
James' extended absence is a tough blow to a Los Angeles team battling for playoff positioning near the top of the Western Conference standings.
The Lakers sit at 40-23, owning the No. 3 spot in the West. They're only one game behind the Denver Nuggets at No. 2, but they're also just one game ahead of the Houston Rockets at No. 5.
Luka Dončić should help mitigate the loss of James. Dončić finished with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists without his star running mate during a 111-108 loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Monday. He shot just 8-of-26 from the field, though.
As for James, the 40-year-old wasn't showing many signs of slowing down prior to the injury. In 58 starts this season, he averaged 25.0 points and 8.2 rebounds to go along with 8.5 assists per game on 51.7/38.4/77.0 shooting splits.
Until James is cleared to return, Dorian Finney-Smith and Dalton Knecht should continue to receive extended playing time.
