Video: Luka Doncic Takes Blame After Redick Ripped Lakers' Communication in Nets Loss

Adam WellsMar 11, 2025

Luka Dončić shouldered the blame for the Los Angeles Lakers' sloppy play in a 111-108 loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night.

Speaking to reporters after the game (starts at 4:25 mark), Dončić agreed with head coach JJ Redick's assessment that there was a lack of communication on the court.

Redick ripped into the Lakers for what he said was a "very low-level communication game" for the team that he thought severely hindered their play on both ends of the floor:

"I think it was just an overall mentality just to take shortcuts tonight. Want to be a good team? You want to win in the NBA? You got to do the hard stuff. We couldn't even pass to each other. We couldn't enter our offense, running ball screens literally at half court. Yeah, that's going to end up in a turnover. I don't know what we're doing."

The Lakers entered Monday's game playing shorthanded. LeBron James is expected to miss one to two weeks after suffering a groin injury in Saturday's loss to the Boston Celtics. Jaxson Hayes, Rui Hachimura and Dorian Finney-Smith also sat out.

With Dončić leading the way, the Lakers started well by taking a 28-16 lead against the Nets after the first quarter. They were outscored 95-80 the rest of the way, with the Nets scoring at least 30 points in each of the final three quarters.

Los Angeles' defense, which had been so instrumental in the team's success during its recent eight-game winning streak, allowed the Nets to shoot 40.0 percent from three (18-of-45).

Dončić finished the game with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists for his second triple-double as a member of the Lakers, but he shot just 8-of-26 from the field for his second-lowest field-goal percentage (30.8) in 12 starts since the trade.

The Lakers have lost back-to-back games for the first time since the All-Star break. They have fallen one game behind the Denver Nuggets in the race for the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.

Dončić and the Lakers will look to get back on track Thursday when they travel to Fiserv Forum for a marquee matchup with Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard and the Milwaukee Bucks.
