Marcelo, Real Madrid Agree on New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction

Rob BlanchetteJul 10, 2015

Brazilian left-back Marcelo has pledged his future to Real Madrid after agreeing terms on a new deal in the Spanish capital.

The popular player has signed a new contract that will keep him with Florentino Perez's club until 2020, as confirmed by the Bernabeu club.

The 2015-16 season will be Marcelo's 10th with Los Blancos, with Ruben Vegas of Marca reporting Real supporters want to see the defender become club captain ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, if Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos leave the Bernabeu:

"

In the event that both Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos were to leave this summer, some 61.4 percent of the almost 6,000 respondents would prefer Marcelo to inherit the captaincy, rather than Cristiano Ronaldo assuming the mantle.

The majority of our readers seemingly put greater stock in the Brazilian's years of service, having been a member of the first-team squad since January 2007, than in Cristiano's general clout. It is worth remembering that Ronaldo only moved to the Bernabeu in the summer of 2009.

"

Marcelo featured prominently for Madrid last term during a season of disappointment after scooping La Decima in the previous year.

Per WhoScored.com, the defender started 41 games in La Liga and the Champions League, scoring three times and recording nine assists from his wide berth.

Marcelo has become a loyal servant to the Perez regime, and he will be a vital cog in the new Rafael Benitez administration. He gives the team good service from the left, but his defending is susceptible to occasional errors.

This will be an element Benitez will not be keen on—but the new manager will need the leadership that the Brazilian player provides.
