Mavs' Jason Kidd: 'No One Feels Sorry For Us' After Kyrie Irving Season-Ending Injury
Jason Kidd knows that NBA teams aren't going to let up against the Dallas Mavericks just because of their circumstances.
After star point guard Kyrie Irving suffered a season-ending torn ACL, the Mavs head coach expressed that Dallas will have to work with who it has to win games.
"No one feels sorry for us. This is a business. We have a job and responsibility and that's to go out and play," Kidd said. "It's a real simple message. Guys are going to get a great opportunity to play that maybe wouldn't have gotten as much time. We've got 20 games left and we've got to find a way to put our best foot forward."
The Mavs have been dealt bad injury luck all year. They were without former star Luka Dončić for more than a month, though they ended up trading him to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis.
Davis showed promise that his addition could be enough to get Dallas moving in the right direction, dropping 26 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks in his debut. Unfortunately for the Mavs and Davis, he suffered an adductor strain in that game, leaving him sidelined for several weeks.
Now, it seems Davis could be done for the year. ESPN's Shams Charania reported Tuesday that Davis might opt to end his season early and shift his focus towards recovering this offseason.
With Irving out for the year, the Mavs mounting a playoff run would be a tough task. If Davis decides not to play again this year, reaching the playoffs would be a miracle.
Dallas is currently sitting in 10th place in the Western Conference at 32-30 and will need to play its best basketball over the last 20 games to at least earn a bid to the play-in tournament.
But as Kidd said, nobody feels bad for the Mavericks and its up to them to make things work even without Irving. That will take plays like Klay Thompson, PJ Washington and others stepping up big in the coming weeks.
