Video: Bill Belichick's UNC Practices with No Jersey Numbers; Players Must 'Earn It'
Bill Belichick is instituting a similar practice he employed during his New England Patriots' days at North Carolina—removing names and jersey numbers from the team's practice uniforms.
"That's just what we do. We go out there and earn it," he told reporters Wednesday. "The numbers and what color gloves we wear and all that's not as important as doing your job and being responsible and accountable to your teammates."
Belichick said the plan at North Carolina is to run a "pro system" in all three phases of the game, though learning his roster will take time.
"We want to play to the strengths of our players and it probably takes awhile to figure that out," he told reporters.
Belichick's hiring will obviously come with huge expectations after his incredibly successful NFL career. Whether that translates to the college game remains to be seen, however.
"We'll see," he said when asked about his own expectations for 2025. "I don't know. We'll go out there and do what we do and see what happens. See how it goes."
