Tyrese Maxey Out for 76ers after Suffering Back Injury vs. Trail Blazers
The Philadelphia 76ers faced more injury troubles on Monday.
Per The Philadelphia Inquirer's Keith Pompey, star guard Tyrese Maxey suffered a back contusion and won't return against the Portland Trail Blazers. He played 23 minutes on Monday, logging five points and six assists.
The 24-year-old has had a mostly healthy 2024-25 season, playing 51 of the 76ers' 59 games. He's recently been nursing an injury to his shooting hand but played through the ailment on Monday.
Philadelphia has dealt with a handful of injuries to its stars this year. Joel Embiid has managed a lingering knee injury all season, and the 76ers have now shut him down for the remainder of the year. Star rookie Jared McCain had an outstanding start, putting up 15.3 points in 23 games, but was ruled out for the rest of the season in January because of knee surgery.
Philadelphia's offseason addition Paul George has also missed 19 games.
Amid what has been a disastrous season for Philadelphia, Maxey has been one of the only bright spots. The fifth-year player has continued his trajectory upward and is putting up 26.7 points, 6.1 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game.
If he has to miss extended time, the 76ers' chances of getting into the playoff mix would get even worse.
Philadelphia is sitting in 11th place in the Eastern Conference at 21-38. With just 23 games left this year, the 76ers will need a strong finish to even reach the play-in tournament.
