Cam Ward Won't Throw During Drills at 2025 NFL Combine; Waiting for Miami Pro Day

University of Miami quarterback Cam Ward confirmed Friday that he will not take part in throwing drills at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Ward said that while he won't throw Saturday, he will do so at his upcoming pro day:

It was previously reported Sunday by ESPN's Jeff Legwold that Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, who is Ward's main competition to be the top quarterback selected in the 2025 NFL draft, would not work out for teams at the combine.

It isn't particularly surprising that Ward and Sanders have decided not to throw at the combine since it has become a trend in recent years for the top quarterbacks to throw only at their pro day.

Doing that allows the quarterbacks to throw to receivers they know in an environment that is familiar.

Ward, 22, is coming off a highly productive senior season at Miami after previously playing for FCS Incarnate Word and Washington State.

In his only campaign with the Hurricanes, Ward completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns and seven interceptions, while also rushing for 204 yards and four touchdowns.

Ward finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting and was also named ACC Player of the Year and the Davey O'Brien Award winner, which is given annually to the top quarterback in college football.

This year's quarterback class is not considered to be anywhere near as strong as last year's when quarterbacks were taken with the first three picks and six of the first 12.

That is hugely beneficial to Ward and Sanders since it could push them to the top of the draft even if there are prospects at better positions who are graded more highly.

Of the teams picking inside the top seven of the 2025 NFL draft, the Tennessee Titans (No. 1), Cleveland Browns (No. 2), New York Giants (No. 3), Las Vegas Raiders (No. 6) and New York Jets (No. 7) all have an obvious need at quarterback.

Because of that, both Ward and Sanders are in good position to come off the board by the time the Carolina Panthers pick at No. 8.

On-field workouts at the combine probably weren't going to do much to change the perception of Ward or Sanders since there is a ton of tape available on both of them.

However, the interview process could go a long way toward determining which quarterback goes first and where they are taken, so it is understandable why that may be their primary focus in Indianapolis.
