Anthony Davis Consulted LeBron James After Lakers Trade to Mavs: I 'Didn't Know S--t'

Scott PolacekFeb 26, 2025

Anthony Davis was an NBA champion and one of the best big men in the league during his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, so it naturally came as a shock when the team traded him to the Dallas Mavericks as part of the deal that brought Luka Dončić to Southern California.

With Dallas facing the Lakers for the first time since the trade on Tuesday, the move was naturally under the spotlight once again.

And Davis explained that the first thing he did after the initial shock was FaceTime LeBron James.

"When it happened, I honestly didn't know s--t," Davis said, per Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times. "He's been my running mate for six years ... so the first thing I wanted to do was call him. ... Obviously, I know there are going to be a lot of political things in the front office when they talk to me.

"The front office has to do what it has to do and obviously they're going to do what's best for the organization. So I don't know if I ever got the 'real' about any of it. I don't know what's true or what's not, coming from upstairs. So, my thing is I'm gonna go to my counterpart who I've been running with and see what's going on, get his reaction and that's all it was. We had a conversation. That was it.

"Everybody's saying nobody knew and all this other s--t. I just don't believe it. But, hey man, I'm past that. I'm ready to move forward with Dallas, try to get a championship there with these guys. First off, getting back on the floor and get ready to compete. All the emotions, that s--t lasted that night when it was just a shock."

It seems James was as shocked as Davis considering ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported in the aftermath of the trade that the King was out to dinner with his family when news of the move broke.

He also told reporters as much earlier this month:

"The first time I heard it I thought it was for sure fake," he said. "I thought it was a hoax, people messing around, whatever. But then AD called me, AD FaceTimed me, and I talked to him for quite a while. Even when I got off the phone with him it still didn't seem real. It still pretty much didn't seem real until I saw Luka today and then I saw a clip of AD at the Dallas shootaround. That's when it finally hit me like, 'Oh s--t, this is real.'"

While Davis was an excellent player for the Lakers, the front office surely jumped at the opportunity to add someone like Dončić.

After all, he is just 25 years old and someone who can be the face of the franchise for years even after James retires or moves elsewhere. He can also elevate them to championship contention as soon as this season and is already one of the best players of his generation.

That was on display Tuesday when he helped lead the Lakers to a win over his former team with a triple-double of 19 points, 15 rebounds and 12 assists. There is already a clear chemistry with James, and Los Angeles' ceiling only figures to get higher the more they play together.

As for Davis, he was sidelined with an adductor injury he suffered in his first game with the Mavericks on Feb. 8.
