Anthony Edwards, Wolves Stun NBA Fans with Thrilling Comeback Win vs. SGA, Thunder
Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves overcame a 25-point deficit to defeat the red-hot Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night.
The 23-year-old guard stunned fans as he dropped 17 points against the Thunder, delivering on both ends of the floor, including a game-saving block on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in overtime.
The Timberwolves improved to 32-27 after taking down the first place Thunder who fell to 46-11.
In addition to his 17 points, Anthony Edwards tallied 13 rebounds and eight assists while fighting through injury. Jaden McDaniels had a standout performance with 27 points, 11 rebounds and two steals, while Naz Reid added 22 points and 11 boards.
On the other side, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander impressed despite the loss, scoring 39 points on 55 percent shooting, along with 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Veteran Mike Conley got Minnesota on the board early with a deep three-pointer off a McDaniels assist. McDaniels came out firing, making four of his first five shots, but the Thunder held a narrow 32-28 lead after one.
Oklahoma City took control in the second quarter, outscoring Minnesota 32-17 to take a 64-45 lead into halftime as Edwards struggled to find his rhythm.
Behind Gilgeous-Alexander’s 10 third-quarter points, the Thunder extended their lead to 22 heading into the fourth, seemingly on their way to a blowout win.
Minnesota, however, stormed back in the final frame, outscoring the Thunder 41-19, including a 16-0 run. A costly foul by Alex Caruso sent McDaniels to the line, where he tied the game 121-121 with 11.2 seconds left, forcing overtime.
The Timberwolves didn’t score in the extra period until the 3:31 mark when Nickeil Alexander-Walker hit a jumper off a McDaniels assist. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, but Edwards delivered on the defensive end, blocking Gilgeous-Alexander’s layup attempt with 13 seconds left. Alexander-Walker then sealed the win with a pair of free throws, lifting Minnesota to a dramatic comeback victory.
The Timberwolves will travel to Los Angeles to take on LeBron James and the Lakers on Thursday.
