LeBron James Agrees with Steve Kerr Calling Kevin Durant USA Men's Basketball GOAT
Kevin Durant's former head coach, Steve Kerr, considers him the greatest Olympic basketball player of all time—and so does LeBron James.
“Kevin’s the greatest men's Olympic player of all time,” Kerr said during Netflix’s Court of Gold.
“Facts!” James responded on social media.
Durant has competed in four Olympics for Team USA, first joining the squad in 2012, when the U.S. took home gold in London. At just 23 years old in his Olympic debut, Durant broke Team USA’s scoring record with 156 total points, per TeamUSA.com. He also set a record with 34 three-pointers while averaging 19.5 points per game.
In 2016, Durant led Team USA in Rio with 19.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, earning him co-USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year honors alongside Carmelo Anthony.
At the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Durant continued his record-setting ways, averaging 20.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game, leading to his second USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year award in 2021.
In his most recent appearance at the 2024 Paris Games, he averaged 13.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists while becoming the only four-time gold medalist in men’s basketball history, per TeamUSA.com.
James, who made his Olympic debut in 2004 in Athens, has been Durant’s teammate in two of his four gold-medal runs—once in 2012 and again in 2024.
The praise from Kerr is especially significant, considering he has coached several players who have helped Team USA win gold. That includes Stephen Curry, who joined Durant and James in 2024 to make his Olympic debut under his Golden State Warriors coach. Curry became just the third American to make 20 or more three-pointers in the Olympics, joining Durant and Anthony, per TeamUSA.com.
The 36-year-old could make one more Olympic run in 2028 in Los Angeles, joining James (39 years, 194 days) as one of the oldest Team USA Olympic basketball players ever, nearing his 40th birthday at that point.
