Jimmy Butler Backs Steve Kerr's Small-Ball Warriors Lineup: 'We're Getting It Done'
Jimmy Butler is a firm believer that you don't have to mess with something if it's working, based on his support of Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr utilizing a small-ball starting lineup right now.
Speaking to reporters after Friday's 132-108 win over the Sacramento Kings, Butler praised the small lineup because "we're getting it done" right now.
"I like it," Butler said. "I do. You’ve just got some feisty individuals out there that’s fighting, scrapping on both sides of the ball, sharing the ball, scoring, getting stops. Small or not, we’re getting it done."
The Warriors' starting unit against the Kings featured Butler, Stephen Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Draymond Green and Moses Moody. Butler is the tallest player in that group with a listed height of 6'7".
Kerr said prior to tipoff that is their best two-way lineup, then joked they "lack size but have brainpower."
Things have been working for the Warriors since adding Butler into the fold. They are 4-1 with him in the lineup, including victories over playoff contenders like the Milwaukee Bucks and Houston Rockets.
What the Warriors lack in size, they are making up for in being opportunistic. They had a 24-12 turnover advantage against the Kings. Butler hasn't turned the ball over in each of his past two games and has a total of five turnovers in five games with Golden State.
Friday's game featured one of the most balanced offensive attacks the Warriors have had all season. Four players scored at least 20 points. Buddy Hield's 22-point effort off the bench marked his highest-scoring game since Dec. 8.
This was exactly what the Warriors were hoping for when they acquired Butler. They might eventually run into some teams that can push them around due to their lack of size, but this unit looks much more formidable than what they had prior to the blockbuster trade for the six-time All-Star.
