Kobe Bryant, Muhammad Ali to Get Statues in National Garden of American Heroes
NBA legend Kobe Bryant and boxing legend Muhammad Ali will receive statues at the National Garden of American Heroes, President Donald Trump announced on Thursday.
Prominent figures including Aretha Franklin, Jackie Robinson, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglass, Billie Holiday and Coretta Scott King will also have statues featured at the National Garden of American Heroes.
Trump initially signed an executive order to create the National Garden of American Heroes in 2020, but it was revoked following an administration change, per USA Today's Kinsey Crowley.
The original order suggested the statues depict "historically significant Americans" such as scientists, civil rights leaders, judges and authors (via Crowley).
As for Bryant, the late Los Angeles Lakers star was an MVP as well as an 18-time All-Star, five-time NBA champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist. He was also enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
Ali is arguably the greatest boxer of all time, owning a record of 56-5 with 37 knockouts during his professional career from 1960-81.
He died in 2016 at the age of 74.
Ali was an Olympic gold medalist in 1960 and became the first man to win a world heavyweight title three times. He was a cultural icon who also held the the WBC, WBA, NABF and NYSAC heavyweight titles.
Bryant and Ali are set to receive statues as a tribute to their legacies both in and out of their respective sports.
