Aidan Hutchinson Spoke to Myles Garrett About Joining Lions amid Browns Trade Request

Scott PolacekFeb 19, 2025

It was easy for NFL fans to think about what a Detroit Lions defensive line would look like with Aidan Hutchinson on one side and Myles Garrett on the other when the two star pass-rushers were photographed together at NFL Honors earlier this month.

Well, Hutchinson revealed he has thought about it too during an appearance on Wednesday's episode of The Squeeze podcast (h/t Mike Moraitis of Sporting News).

"If me and Myles were to pair up, that would be deadly, you know?" he said. "I was talking to him, we were at the Honors and we were just talking about what could be. And although it's probably unlikely, I think I would be thrilled to play next to him if it were to happen. But, yeah, our whole D-line would be like totally elevated and we would—whew—that'd be a scary defensive line.

"We get along, too. I've seen him these last few years at different things. He texted me after I got hurt, which was just a cool thing. Guys outside of your own team who reach out to you—so I think he's a good dude. If he does (come), great, but I don't know. We'll see. But that would be awesome."

Garrett made waves earlier this month when he requested a trade away from the Cleveland Browns and said his goal was to go somewhere that would allow him to realistically compete for a Super Bowl.

Detroit would certainly be one of those destinations, as the NFC North team finished with the best record in the conference at 15-2.

However, defensive injuries—including a season-ending one to Hutchinson—proved to be the Lions' undoing in the playoffs. They allowed 45 points in an NFC Divisional Round loss to the Washington Commanders as Hutchinson and many of the team's best defensive players could do nothing but watch.

The playoff loss highlighted the importance of quality depth along the defensive front heading into the offseason, but Garrett would be much more than a depth piece.

He is one of the NFL's best players and counts a Defensive Player of the Year, four first-team All-Pro nods, six Pro Bowl selections and seven straight seasons of double-digit sacks on his resume since he was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2017 NFL draft.

Pairing him with Hutchinson would be a nightmare for opposing offensive lines, which couldn't double-team both of them on a given play. That would create situations where one of them was always facing single blocking, and the Lions would surely rack up plenty of sacks as a result.

They might also take the next step and reach the Super Bowl after losing in the NFC playoffs the last two years, which surely makes Hutchinson want to play with Garrett even more after their interaction.
