Clinton Portis Named RBs Coach on DeSean Jackson's Delaware State CFB Coaching Staff
Head coach DeSean Jackson's staff at Delaware State is adding a familiar name.
On Wednesday, Delaware State announced Clinton Portis as its new running backs coach:
Portis starred at Miami and helped lead the Hurricanes to the national championship during the 2001 season before he was a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft. His NFL resume included an Offensive Rookie of the Year, two Pro Bowl selections and six different seasons with more than 1,200 rushing yards.
He provides another recognizable name that could help Delaware State on the recruiting trail in addition to the field.
This will be Jackson's first season as the head coach of the Hornets, and he has quite a rebuilding effort in front of him. The program went 1-11 overall and 0-5 in MEAC play during the 2024 season after winning just one game in 2023 as well.
Delaware State's last winning season was in 2012, although there is a blueprint in place.
Deion Sanders brought instant name recognition to Jackson State and helped the Tigers go from 4-8 the season before he arrived in 2019 to back-to-back Celebration Bowls in 2021 and 2022.
He parlayed that success into his current job as the head coach of Colorado.
Like Sanders, Jackson has an NFL resume that figures to help him in recruiting efforts. So does Portis, who is now a member of the Hornets staff as they begin looking ahead to the future.
