Anthony Edwards Predicts Victor Wembanyama to Be NBA's Best Player in 5 Years

After declaring that he doesn't see himself as the future face of the NBA, Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards' pick for the league's best player in the next five years won't come as much of a surprise.

While participating in a player poll conducted by The Athletic's Joe Vardon, Edwards was among those who voted San Antonio Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama to be the NBA's best player within the next half-decade.

"That’s what they got Wemby for," Edwards said succinctly.

Wembanyama received six votes in Vardon's poll. Cleveland Cavaliers big man Evan Mobley tied with "the field" with two votes apiece, while Edwards, Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham, Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum, Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dink Pate of the G-League Ignite each received a single vote.

Cunningham revealed that he voted for himself, saying, "I’m going to go with me."

Mobley received a vote of confidence from his teammate Darius Garland, who declared, "He’s a dawg, he's a unicorn." However, Mobley admitted that Wembanyama would be his biggest competition.

"Maybe me or Victor. One of those guys," Mobley said.

Wembanyama is already the front-runner for NBA Defensive Player of the Year in his sophomore season, so it's clear that the future is bright for the 21-year-old. Edwards and the rest of his peers know that he has the potential to become a generational talent who could dominate the league for years to come.
