Adam Silver: Hornets Haven't Protested Lakers' Decision to Rescind Mark Williams Trade

Zach BacharFeb 15, 2025

Mark Williams will be staying with the Charlotte Hornets.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that the Hornets "have not filed a protest of any kind" regarding the Los Angeles Lakers' rescinded trade involving Williams, according to ESPN's Marc J. Spears.

The Lakers initially acquired the center prior to the Feb. 6 trade deadline, but the deal was later rescinded due to a failed physical exam that showed "multiple issues," per ESPN's Shams Charania.

The move would have sent Williams to Los Angeles in exchange for rookie guard Dalton Knecht, forward Cam Reddish, an unprotected 2031 first-round pick and a 2030 pick swap.

The trade could not be amended, as the failed physical occurred after the deadline passed.

Charania reported on Monday that the Hornets "have been in contact with the NBA as they explore options to dispute" the failed agreement, but it appears as though an official protest isn't on the horizon.

Williams would have served as an intriguing offensive option alongside LeBron James and Luka Doncic, with the latter acquired in a shocking blockbuster trade involving the Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz on Feb. 2.

In 23 games with the Hornets this season, Williams averaged a career-high 15.6 points to go along with 9.6 rebounds per game while shooting 58.6 percent from the field. Williams last played on Feb. 5 and reportedly had been away from the team prior to the All-Star break, according to Roderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer.

The former first-round pick has been hampered by injuries to open his career, missing time to start his 2024-25 campaign due to back and foot issues.

Los Angeles pivoted after moving on from Williams, addressing its center depth by signing veteran Alex Len as a free agent on Tuesday.

While Charlotte was reportedly contacting the NBA to address the rescinded trade, Silver revealed that no further action has been taken yet.
