Clyde Edwards-Helaire Re-Signs with Saints on 1-Year Contract After Chiefs Exit
The New Orleans Saints are bringing back Clyde Edwards-Helaire for another season.
The team announced on Thursday that it re-signed the running back to a one-year deal.
The Saints originally signed Edwards-Helaire to their practice squad in December, and he appeared in New Orleans' final two games, recording 46 rushing yards on 13 carries.
Edwards-Helaire was the 32nd pick in the 2020 draft out of LSU and began his career with the Kansas City Chiefs. A promising rookie year saw him collect 803 rushing yards and four touchdowns along with 297 receiving yards and a touchdown in 13 games.
He had back-to-back 100-rushing yard games early in his second season, but ended up spending several games on the injured reserve because of a knee injury. He played 10 games, recording 517 rushing yards and four touchdowns plus 129 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
He dealt with injuries again in 2022, playing just 10 games and recording 302 rushing yards, 151 receiving yards and six total touchdowns.
While Edwards-Helaire was healthy for most of the 2023 season, he didn't see much action while playing behind Isiah Pacheco. He recorded just 70 carries for 223 yards and a touchdown, adding 188 yards and a touchdown through the air.
Edwards-Helaire re-signed with Kansas City ahead of the 2024 season but didn't see the field before being released in December. Being waived by the Chiefs led to New Orleans adding him to the roster to close out the year.
Edwards-Helaire hasn't been able to break through the way he hoped after a promising rookie year, but returning to the Saints should give him the chance to reset and get plenty of reps behind Alvin Kamara under new head coach Kellen Moore.
