Jason Witten Didn't Discuss Cowboys Job with Jerry Jones; NFL HC Is 'Long-Term Goal'
As someone who spent 16 years as a member of the Dallas Cowboys organization, Jason Witten was understandably rumored to be a potential candidate when the team was looking for its next head coach.
The former tight end said he would love to be the Cowboys coach eventually, but it wasn't in his cards this time around. He never got a call from Jerry Jones about the position.
“Sure, it’s a part of my long-term goals,” Witten said, via Clarence Hill of All City DLLS (h/t Pro Football Talk's Charean Williams). “I did not talk to Jerry about it. I think they went through a thorough process for them and got to a place where they felt like Brian [Schottenheimer] was the guy. I never worked with Brian or any of that, but I’ll always pull for the Cowboys.

“But, yeah, of course that’s a long-term goal of mine to one day get back there, when the right opportunity comes. I think for me to be able to coach my son and take over a program and win back-to-back state championships at that level, it’s been really, really special and memories that I’ll keep with me for the rest of my life. When that right time and the right opportunity comes, I’m excited to embark on that next chapter.”
Witten, who retired in 2020, is currently a head coach at the high school level and has won back-to-back state titles in Texas. He won't be apart of the Cowboys this season, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him join an NFL team's coaching staff in the coming years.
If things don't workout for Brian Schottenheimer in Dallas, perhaps Witten's first NFL head coaching gig will be with the Cowboys.
