Best Golazos from World Football This Weekend

Ryan BaileyJul 5, 2015

David Villa's debut season in MLS has now resulted in eight goals, with the Spanish striker bagging a brace during NYCFC's Independence Day trip over the Canadian border to Quebec.

One of Villa's strikes earned a place in our weekend golazo ranking, where it is complemented by fantastic efforts from the Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Russia.

The finest goal, however, was a historic long-ranger from the United States' Carli Lloyd in the Women's World Cup Final.

Enjoy the ranking, and be sure to leave a comment about your favourite before you go...

8. Matias Fernandez (Chile) vs. Argentina

Last weekend's ranking featured a stunning penalty kick from the Copa America. It's not often that a spot kick is classified as a golazo, but the tournament played host to yet another incredible penalty during Saturday's final.

Fiorentina midfielder Matias Fernandez put Chile on the road to a shootout victory over Argentina with an absolute rocket of a spot-kick. His combination of power and perfect technique gave Sergio Romero no chance of getting near it.

7. David Villa (NYCFC) vs. Montreal Impact

2 of 8

New York City earned a 2-1 over Montreal Impact in Quebec on Saturday thanks to two goals from star forward David Villa.

The Spaniard's first was a great strike from a tight angle in the 34th minute, but his second was a well-placed free-kick to earn the new MLS franchise a much-needed victory.

6. Tyrone Mears (Seattle Sounders) vs. DC United

3 of 8

The Seattle Sounders consolidated their place at the top of the MLS Western Conference with a 1-0 home win over D.C. United on Friday evening.

The crucial strike came two minutes from time, when former Burnley defender Tyrone Mears struck a wonderful first-time shot across goal.

5. Timothy Chandler (USA) vs. Guatemala

4 of 8

The USA kicked off a weekend of Independence Day festivities with a 4-0 win over Guatemala on Friday evening in Nashville, Tennessee.

Just before the hour mark, Eintracht Frankfurt defender Timothy Chandler put the Americans two goals clear in their Gold Cup warm-up bout with a wonderful left-footed strike across goal.

4. Yann M'Vila (Dynamo Moscow) vs. Ajax

5 of 8

Dynamo Moscow looked set for defeat in their friendly with Ajax on Saturday, when they were 2-1 down with 82 minutes on the clock.

However, the honours were shared when on-loan midfielder Yann M'Vila received the ball on the edge of the box and unleashed an absolute thunderbolt.

3. Jonas Aguirre (Rosario Central) vs. River Plate

6 of 8

River Plate sunk to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Rosario Central on Friday evening.

The Primera Division Argentina clash was put beyond River Plate's reach in the 90th minute, when left winger Jonas Aguirre—a player nicknamed the Velociraptor—broke away and lobbed the 'keeper from distance with a very cheeky finish.

2. Neto (Chapecoense) vs. Vasco Da Gama

7 of 8

Chapecoense earned a 1-0 win over troubled Brazilian Campeonato opponents Vasco da Gama on Saturday thanks to a very special strike.

In the 75th minute, Neto found the net with a spectacular bicycle kick after picking up the ball from a set piece.

Not a bad finish for a defender!

1. Carli Lloyd (USA) vs. Japan

8 of 8

The USA lifted their third Women's World Cup title on Sunday evening after their 5-2 victory over a Japan side that was torn apart in the opening quarter of an hour.

The star of the show was undoubtedly Carli Lloyd, who scored a historic 13-minute hat-trick. Her third goal, in the 16th minute, was a sublime lob over Japan 'keeper Ayumi Kaihori from the halfway line.

There have been few finer strikes in a World Cup final.
