Anelka, now 36 years old, is the latest big name to take on a player-manager role in India’s top flight. World Cup winner Marco Materazzi and ex-England international goalkeeper David James also took on dual roles last season with Chennaiyin FC and Kerala Blasters respectively.

While the Frenchman will bring a wealth of experience to the role, sports journalist Akarsh Sharma can’t foresee the former Arsenal, Real Madrid and Chelsea star being the best leader:
Anelka is renowned for his languid playing style on the field, and the nickname Le Sulk has accompanied him throughout his career despite his obvious quality.
But with a Champions League, two Premier League titles and three FA Cup wins to his name, the Mumbai players will learn plenty from the club’s new figurehead. Although Anelka may not strike people as a bold, brash leader, perhaps the added responsibility afforded to him will prompt a change in attitude in the twilight of his storied career.
