Copa America 2015: Live Stream Schedule, Predictions for Final, 3rd-Place Match

Matt JonesJul 3, 2015

The 2015 Copa America is poised to come to a thrilling climax this weekend, with Chile and Argentina set to scrap it out for continental glory.

The hosts and the favourites beat Peru and Paraguay, respectively, to make it to the Santiago showpiece. Even though the vanquished semi-finalists will be hurting after their own defeats, they each should be proud of their respective efforts and can add some gloss to strong tournaments by winning the third-place play-off.

Bleacher Report's Tim Vickery gave his thoughts ahead of the final:

Peru vs. Paraguay

Both of these teams came into this Copa America with shackled expectations. Many expected Peru and Paraguay to undergo tournaments of respective transition. As such, getting to this stage represents a fine achievement.

Granted, nobody likes these third-place play-off games, but it’ll be important for these two outfits, particularly Peru, as they chase what’ll be their second bronze medal in succession at this competition.

Peru were a little unfortunate in the the semi-finals.

As we can see here via the tournament's official Twitter feed, Peru manager Ricardo Gareca is keen for this to be a key learning curve ahead of World Cup qualifying:

Paraguay could be there for the taking, too. Although Los Guaranies were very impressive in the early stages of this Copa, they were hammered out of sight by a rampant Argentina in their semi-final.

With memories of Lionel Messi running them ragged still raw, will they be able to raise themselves for this one?

Paraguay were run ragged last time out.

It doesn’t look likely. Peru have played with an authority in all of their matches to this point and will have considered themselves unlucky to have been eliminated at the hands of Chile last time out. Expect them to get the better of what’ll be an entertaining third place play-off.

Prediction: Peru 3-2 Paraguay

Argentina vs. Chile

Chile can cap off what has been a sensational tournament by beating Argentina in Saturday’s final, and although the Albiceleste were looking ominous in their previous encounter, La Roja have what it takes to get the job done.

Although Argentina have underwhelmed for the most part at this tournament, everything clicked into gear for Tata Martino’s team in the semi-final. The fluidity and ferocity that has been so scarce really came to the fore in the 6-1 win over Paraguay, with Messi, even though he didn’t get on the scoresheet, turning in a sensational performance.

Restricting Messi will be key to Chile's chances.

Here’s a look at how the Argentina skipper has fared so far in comparison with Chile star Alexis Sanchez, per OptaJavier:

If Argentina can find their attacking triumvirate of Messi, Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria with the same sort of regularity in the final, they’ll cause major problems for the Chile defence. But the manner of La Roja’s play will ensure that doesn’t happen quite as often as it did against Paraguay.

Expect another determined showing off the ball from Chile.

As we can see here courtesy of Auckland City coach Jose Figueira, Chile rarely let teams settle into a neat passing rhythm:

It may look a little reckless in the above still, but this is an art that has been refined by national-team coach Jorge Sampaoli during his tenure. As a result, Argentina may find it tough to locate Messi in quite as much space this time around.

But what’ll tilt this final in the way of the hosts is Argentina’s own attacking ambition. Their instinctive willingness to get forward will free up space for Alexis and Arturo Vidal—who have both been smothered in the knockout stages—and allow the Chileans to have much more of an effect on proceedings.

Prediction: Chile 2-1 Argentina
