12 Premier League Players in Dire Need of a Change of Scenery

Mark JonesJul 3, 2015

Most clubs seem to have them—those players who have seemingly faded into the background so much that you kind of forget they're still there.

Leaving a football club is often trickier than it may seem, with families and friends all affected and the player perhaps not too keen to up sticks and start all over again, even if it might be in the best interests of his career.

But with the transfer window open and opportunities to move elsewhere abound, will any of these 12 Premier League players take the hint this summer and head for pastures new?

Joel Campbell, Arsenal

1 of 12

It's not so much a change of scenery that Arsenal forward Joel Campbell needs, more a change of parent club.

The Costa Rican forward has been loaned out four times by Arsenal since he first signed for the Gunners in 2011, and as Bleacher Report's James McNicholas recently suggested, it really is time that he takes the hint and moves somewhere where he has more chance of making a lasting impact.

Josh McEachran, Chelsea

2 of 12

Now 22, Josh McEachran's fifth loan spell away from Chelsea came at feeder club Vitesse last season, with the Eredivisie side joining Swansea City, Middlesbrough, Watford and Wigan Athletic on a decreasingly impressive roll of honour.

Desperate to find the first youth player to come through the ranks and make a lasting impact at the club since John Terry, Chelsea had high hopes for McEachran, but now a move surely suits all parties.

Emanuele Giaccherini, Sunderland

3 of 12

Highly regarded when he left Juventus for Sunderland in the summer of 2013, Emanuele Giaccherini doesn't look like adding to his 21 Italy caps.

The winger has suffered from the succession of managers passing through the Stadium of Light and their decisions to leave him out of their plans, and you suspect a move back to his homeland now has to be the preferred option following an injury-curtailed 2014/15, during which he played just eight times in the Premier League.

Fabio Borini, Liverpool

4 of 12

Having opted to stay at the club last summer, Italian forward Fabio Borini failed to make much of an impact in Liverpool's disappointing 2014/15 campaign—scoring only once in a win at Aston Villa.

A quick, nimble forward who can thrive if he's given the right service, Borini seems to have no future with the Reds following the arrival of Danny Ings, and a move away seems certain to happen sooner or later.

Anders Lindegaard, Manchester United

5 of 12

Having played just 19 Premier League matches in five years and failing to appear in a game in any competition last season, goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard has become every inch the forgotten man of Manchester United.

Lindegaard hasn't added to his six Denmark caps since 2011, and with a year still left on his United contract, he doesn't appear anywhere near challenging the likes of David De Gea and Victor Valdes for a first-team place. It's time he let go.

Emmanuel Mayuka, Southampton

6 of 12

He signed a five-year deal with Southampton in 2012, but the chances of Emmanuel Mayuka making it to the end of that look pretty slim.

The Zambian forward has failed to make any sort of impact at St Mary's, is without a goal in the Premier League and spent the 2013/14 season on loan at Sochaux in Ligue 1. A departure from Saints looks to be the only logical step—if they can find anyone to take him.

Etienne Capoue, Tottenham Hotspur

7 of 12

Etienne Capoue's two seasons as a Tottenham Hotspur player have been remarkably consistent. He's played 18 games in each, scored one goal in each and barely done anything else of note.

The 26-year-old has been unlucky with injuries, but having not featured for Spurs since January and seen the likes of Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb surpass him in the midfield pecking order, it might be time for a return to Ligue 1 if he ever wants to improve on his seven France caps.

Stevan Jovetic, Manchester City

8 of 12

It was tempting to include the 37-year-old third-choice goalkeeper Richard Wright here, given he's never appeared in a match for Manchester City in three years. But he seems more than happy with his life as an employed training cone, so our sights are set a little higher.

Injuries have destroyed Stevan Jovetic's reputation since he arrived in English football from Fiorentina in 2013, and there is a real sense that the Montenegrin will have to return to Serie A if he is to ever reignite his career, even though he's still just 25.

John Obi Mikel, Chelsea

9 of 12

If he's still at the club come the end of the coming season, then John Obi Mikel will be eligible for a testimonial at Chelsea, although just how many fans would turn up to honour him is another matter entirely.

The Nigerian has worked hard to cultivate a career for himself at one of the biggest clubs in the world, but while the best midfielders around tend to repeatedly show flashes of dynamism and something different in their play, the 28-year-old seems to just be stuck passing it sideways. A move would do him good.

Rickie Lambert, Liverpool

10 of 12

He's only been there for a season, but Rickie Lambert's Liverpool future already looks bleak, and he's hardly featured in the conversations among Reds supporters when they discuss how their 2015/16 campaign will go.

Still capable of doing a good job for a Premier League side, Lambert needs to accept that his return to Liverpool hasn't turned out to be the fairy tale everyone claimed it was last summer, with a parting of the ways now best for everyone.

Jose Enrique, Liverpool

11 of 12

Another Liverpool player seemingly destined for the exit is the left-back Jose Enrique, who hasn't played for the club since January and featured just nine times across all competitions in 2014/15.

A Reds player since his switch from Newcastle in 2011, injuries have gradually eroded Enrique's ability, and he's now firmly second choice to compatriot Alberto Moreno on the left for Brendan Rodgers, who doubtless deems him surplus to requirements.

Jesse Lingard, Manchester United

12 of 12

A hit for England's under-21s at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in the Czech Republic this summer, Manchester United's Jesse Lingard faces little opportunity of first-team football in the coming season unless he embarks on a fifth loan deal away from Old Trafford.

He's worn the shirts of Leicester City, Birmingham City, Brighton and Hove Albion and Derby County on temporary spells before, but maybe it's about time he made a permanent switch and looked to kick-start his career elsewhere.
