Germany announced their arrival at the World Cup in some style, demolishing the Ivory Coast 10-0 in their opening game.
Some profligate finishing—and a beautiful Maren Mjelde free-kick— saw them draw their second game, but any fears that the opening game was a fluke were quickly put to bed as Die Nationalelf put four past Thailand and then Sweden.
The German's incredible goalscoring exploits puts history firmly on their side, as ESPN's Paul Carr notes:
Celia Sasic and Anja Mittag have been at their predatory best scoring five goals apiece, while a whole host of other players have also netted for Germany.
As Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl noted, FIFA have received criticism for their organisation of the tournament, making these two heavyweights clash earlier than would be hoped:
However, coach Silvia Neid insists Germany are simply accepting the draw and doing their best to prepare for a difficult tie. Per ESPN.com's Ben Gladwell, she said:
"When the draw took place in December, we could see full well what would happen if we finished first [in Group B] and France finished first [in Group F]... It was all so predictable, but you've just got to live with it.
I think the French are a very good team... You can't just pick out one of their players for special attention because then you've got to name the next, and then the next one. They're all really well trained, they have great technique, they're very intelligent and play a high tempo with the ball, and it's crystal clear that we've got to work excellently as a team
"
Despite a defeat in their second match, France have impressed thanks to wins over England and South Korea, as well as a 5-0 thrashing of Mexico.
Eugenie Le Sommer and Marie-Laure Delie have enjoyed successful tournaments in front of goal, scoring three goals each. At the back they have conceded just twice.

In previous tournaments, isolating star playmaker Louisa Necib was often an effective tactic in stifling France's creativity, but Les Bleues can now call on a number of creators, as World Soccer Talk's Andrew Jerell Jones noted:
From a neutral perspective it will be a shame to see either of these outstanding teams depart Canada so early, but it's likely they'll produce a memorable clash.
Both teams have enjoyed excellent starts in each game of the tournament, so expect a fast-paced, end-to-end early period with goals likely to come before the dust settles.
Germany are the ultimate tournament team in women's football, though, and their experience in the latter stages of World Cups and European Championships will give them the edge here.
Prediction: Germany 3-2 France
