Copa America 2015: Latest Quarter-Final Results, Updated Live Stream Schedule

Christopher SimpsonJun 25, 2015

Chile beat defending champions Uruguay 1-0 in their 2015 Copa America quarter-final on Wednesday to book a place in the final four.

A turbulent second half saw both Edinson Cavani and Jorge Fucile sent off for Uruguay. Cavani in particular can feel aggrieved; having been slapped and poked by Gonzalo Jara, the 28-year-old touched Jara's face, prompting a needless and dramatic fall to the ground and a second yellow card from the referee.

Mauricio Isla capitalised on Fernando Muslera's poor attempt to punch a cross clear of the area to fire home the decisive goal in the 82nd minute before Fucile's foul on Alexis Sanchez in the final minutes sparked an on-field clash between the sides and earned the defender his second booking.

Cavani was sent off in controversial circumstances.

The hosts will face either Bolivia or Peru in the next round as they bid for a maiden Copa America title.

According to Reuters, via the Guardian, Sanchez maintains that winning the tournament is still their goal: "We now have another game. I don’t know if it will be Peru or Bolivia but we still have the dream. We fought hard and we have to thank the fans who were behind us all the way."

Chile to Face Bolivia or Peru

Whichever team progresses to the semi-final will be the underdog against Chile.

Bolivia can count themselves as fortunate to have reached the quarter-finals, having drawn 0-0 with an understrength Mexico side and receiving a 5-0 hammering from Chile.

Peru, however, have looked defensively solid in their Copa America campaign, and they deserve their place in the final eight.

Peru have conceded just two goals at the Copa so far.

La Blanquirroja lost 2-1 to Brazil in a surprisingly narrow opening game before beating Venezuela 1-0 and earning a credible draw with Colombia to finish above their more illustrious rivals in Group C.

As Opta Javier notes, Peru's impressive defence is a departure from their usual displays:

As ESPN FC's Tim Vickery notes, Peru's entire back five has impressed: "Attack-minded full-backs Luis Advincula and Juan Manuel Vargas have shown good discipline, goalkeeper Pedro Gallese looks a class act and the centre-back partnership of Carlos Zambrano and Carlos Ascues has been sound."

Vickery also reports Jefferson Farfan is due to return for Peru following an injury.

Peru's defensive solidity, combined with the firepower Farfan can bring, can overwhelm Bolivia's shaky back line to set up a showdown with Chile.

Argentina and Brazil Still in the Hunt

In the remaining quarter-finals, Argentina take on Colombia in an intriguing clash and Brazil face the slight surprise package Paraguay.

Argentina were solid throughout the group stage, but given their wealth of talent up front, they could hardly be said to have set the competition alight with their performances.

La Albiceleste arguably have too much talent at their disposal, as Gerardo Martino has struggled to successfully accommodate stars such as Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Lionel Messi in the same side.

As the forwards struggle to click, Argentina find themselves relying on individual moments of talent to win matches, as evidenced by their two 1-0 wins in the group stage.

Argentina are yet to find their rhythm up front.

Colombia, meanwhile, have been inconsistent in the tournament so far. After losing to Venezuela in their opening match, they overcame Brazil before drawing with Peru.

Radamel Falcao's continued decline has reduced their power up front, while their other star names have shown little apart from the occasional moment of brilliance.

Argentina ultimately have more quality throughout their side, and for all their faults, they have performed better throughout the tournament so far.

Expect them to progress in a fairly tight encounter.

Should they win, they will face the winners of the final fixture. In all likelihood, that will be Brazil, who showed in their last game they can perform even without the talismanic Neymar, whose suspension will see him sit out the rest of the competition.

Neymar's tournament ended in a turbulent fashion.

Football writer Rik Sharma was particularly impressed with Willian in their 2-1 victory over Venezuela, as he took it upon himself to lead by example in Neymar's absence.

The tournament represents a shot at redemption for Brazil after their humiliating exit at their own World Cup last year.

Neymar's suspension makes this task even more difficult, but the Selecao can take another step toward their goal on Saturday.

Paraguay are unbeaten so far in the tournament, but Brazil have everything on the line and have already shown they can perform without their captain.

A mouth-watering semi-final clash between Brazil and Argentina awaits.
