U21 European Championships 2015 Results: Tuesday Scores and Wednesday Schedule

Hosts Czech Republic were dumped out of the U21 European Championships on Tuesday as they failed to pick up the win they needed against pre-tournament favourites Germany.

The Czech team ran Germany very close as they drew 1-1 and dominated late proceedings, but they could not find the crucial winner that would have seen them through from Group A in place of their opponents.

Denmark claimed top spot in the group as they saw off the Serbia challenge, winning 2-0 in Prague for their second victory of the tournament.

Czech Republic 1-1 Germany

Despite an opening loss to Denmark, a 4-0 drubbing of Serbia had given the hosting Czechs every chance of a semi-final spot ahead of their final group fixture with Germany in Prague.

However, things did not look good 10 minutes into the second half when the Germans went ahead through Nico Schulz, the midfielder poking home from eight yards after Kevin Volland forced a mistake from the Czech defence.

With Denmark leading Serbia 2-0 in the other Group A game on Tuesday, the Cezch Republic needed two unreturned goals to beat Germany in order to advance.

The Germans dominated proceedings after their opener and looked to be cruising to a group-topping victory, but an equaliser from the hosts 24 minutes from the final whistle made for a hugely entertaining final quarter.

Against the run of play, Ondrej Petrak marauded down the right and crossed a vicious ball across the box for Ladislav Krejci to fire into the roof of the net.

As noted by Bundesliga writer Cristian Nyari, the Czech team took control of the game and had Germany on the back foot for the remainder of the match:

A winner would have seen a complete turnaround, with Germany heading out of the tournament and the Czech Republic heading through.

They threw everyone forward—including the goalkeeper—for a couple of late-match set pieces, but they could not find the crucial winner, eventually having to settle for a 1-1 draw.

As Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe noted, the Czech side were hugely entertaining throughout the tournament and were unlucky to be eliminated:

However, Germany had just enough to hang on, but they will need to improve if they wish to go all the way in the Championships.

Denmark 2-0 Serbia

Denmark put in an accomplished performance to add to their opening win over the hosts and seal top spot in Group A.

They opened the scoring early against the Serbians, who were condemned to a second consecutive defeat, their only point of the tournament coming against Germany.

Rasmus Falk put the Danes ahead in the 21st minute, latching onto the end of Riza Durmisi's cross from the left and side-footing the ball into the back of the net.

Football writer Philip O'Connor had few kind words for the Serbian defence, but it was a decent finish from Falk:

Just after half-time, Viktor Fischer's left-footed finish from Pierre Hojbjerg's free-kick effectively wrapped up the win for Denmark, and Germany's failure to beat the Czech's handed them top spot.

They will now face the second-placed finisher in Group B in the semi-finals, likely to be either Sweden or England.
