Matt JonesJun 22, 2015

The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup has encapsulated and enchanted so far, and as we head toward the latter stages of the competition, the thrilling action keeps on coming.

Monday’s matches present arguably the most exciting trio of last-16 ties so far. England and Norway will square off in the first match of the day before the United States face Colombia in what’s likely to be a feisty affair.

The final fixture of the round will see the Netherlands take on reigning champions Japan on Tuesday.

Norway vs. England

OTTAWA, ON - JUNE 11: Ingrid Schjelderup #14 and Elise Thorsnes #16 celebrate their draw against Germany with teammates after the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 Group B match between Germany and Norway at Lansdowne Stadium on June 11, 2015 in Ottawa,

The Norway women’s team brought a smile to everyone’s faces this week as they released a superb satirical video mocking the stereotyped view of the women’s game. But Even Pellerud’s side will have their serious faces on when they get set to meet England in Ottawa.

Here’s a reminder of the hilarious clip which set social media ablaze this week. (Warning: Video contains NSFW language/content):

Norway have been brilliant at this competition, too. They were comfortable winners against Thailand and the Ivory Coast, but their most impressive performance—a committed and cohesive display—came against tournament favourites Germany in a 1-1 draw.

As noted here by Sky Sports News HQ, the game is extremely popular among women in Norway:

A win for the Norwegians would only serve to spark interest, and the same could be said of England. After a poor performance against France in their tournament opener, the Three Lionesses played with a renewed endeavour against Mexico and Colombia, even if they did tire in the latter stages of both matches.

The team seem in great spirits ahead of the game, too:

If they can beat Norway in Ottawa, then they’d face Canada in the quarter-finals. Kartik Krishnaiyer of World Soccer Talk thinks either of these two teams could beat the hosts:

Although Norway possess more flair, there’s a burgeoning belief among these England players. They have defended well at critical moments in matches, and when chances have materialised, the forwards have shown the requisite ruthlessness to take them.

Prediction: Norway 1-2 England (After Extra Time)

United States vs. Colombia

MONCTON, NB - JUNE 13: Leicy Santos #19 of Colombia leads the players on the bench as they greet Lady Andrade after she scored in the first half against the France during the FIFA Women's World Cup 2015 Group F match at Moncton Stadium on June 13, 2015 i

Sparks are going to fly when the United States and Colombia meet in Edmonton.

Ahead of this round-of-16 match, Los Cafeteras forward Lady Andrade was hugely critical of USWNT players in an interview with Paul Logothetis of USA Today: “They belittle us. They think we're a team they're going to walk all over and it will be an easy game for them. We're going to beat them since they like to talk so much.”

The animosity adds another intriguing dimension to what should be an entertaining game. Despite Andrade’s claims, the USWNT are big favourites for this game, even if Jill Ellis’ side haven’t quite played at their best in the matches so far.

However, as noted here by Paul Carr of ESPN.com, on paper, the United States should be making it past Colombia and beyond the quarter-final stages, too:

The South Americans have shown their pedigree in this tournament already, though. They beat France in a shock win in the group stages and showcased bursts of exciting, aesthetic quality against England.

As we can see here, courtesy of Womens Soccer United, Andrade is one of a few Colombia players who has the skills to cause the United States problems:

Flicks and tricks may have to take a back seat in what’s going to be a ferocious match. While the USWNT have remained cool and collected in the buildup, they’ll be desperate to show the South Americans that they’re up for the fight.

WINNIPEG, MB - JUNE 08: Christen Press #23 celebrates with Abby Wambach #20 of the United States after Press scores a second half goal against Australia during the FIFA Women's World Cup 2015 Group D match at Winnipeg Stadium on June 8, 2015 in Winnipeg,

Expect the early stages to be tight, but for the superior class of the American team to eventually show through in the latter stages of the match. Colombia are not the ideal opponent for the USWNT to rediscover their sparkle, but they’ll grind out a crucial victory.

Prediction: United States 1-0 Colombia

Matches are televised on BBC Red Button (UK) and Fox Sports (US).

Matches can be streamed via BBC iPlayer (UK) and Fox Sports Go (US).
