Brazil's knockout-round progression had been remarkably un-Brazilian before their 5-0 drubbing of Senegal.
After some decent displays in the group stage, the South American side needed two penalty shootouts to see them through the last 16 and quarter-finals after both ties ended 0-0 in normal time.
However, they look to have found their scoring touch at just the right time. They dispatched Senegal with ease in Christchurch, their fifth goal from Marcos Guilherme—his second of the game—was a thing of beauty, per FIFA:
They are, unsurprisingly, significant favourites heading into the final, and if they produce a similarly high level of performance as they did against Senegal, they will be very difficult to beat.
However, as proved by Uruguay and Portugal in the first two knockout rounds, they can be frustrated as an attacking force, and Serbia should set up to starve Brazil of opportunities.
The Serbs have had a tough ride on the way to the final, but they have been impressive in their overcoming of some huge challenges. They lost their opener 1-0 to Uruguay in the group stage, but they also saw off a much-fancied Mexican side 2-0.
Fatigue may be an issue for Serbia, as they have gone to extra time in each of their three knockout matches, their quarter-final victory over the United States going all the way to penalties.
But their organisation and dogged determination could prove potent weapons against an easily frustrated Brazil side. Serbia skipper and goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic also seems to have great confidence in his side, per AFP's Neil Sands (via France24):
"Brazil are a great side, one of the best in the world, without doubt. It's a one-off game though, and it will all come down to the little things that can happen on the pitch. We arrived in New Zealand believing we could be champions. We're just a step away, we still believe it.
"
Indeed, despite their underdog status, Serbia have every chance of achieving victory if they stick to an effective game plan and don't attempt to play Brazil at their own game.
It is set to be a final between two teams of varying styles and could thus be a very intriguing matchup. The flair of Brazil is a thing of beauty when in full flow, but Serbia's own style is very effective, and they are a likeable side.
New Zealand have been tremendous hosts to a fine tournament, and they have a fittingly exciting final in prospect.
Brazil have the momentum from their semi-final rout and seem to be more well-stacked with quality, but it is set to be a tight encounter in Auckland.
