Navas Back in Training, Targets July 18 Roma Game
Wednesday, July 15
"[Navas] has returned to action a week earlier than planned...and wants to win Rafa Benitez over before another goalkeeper arrives to replace Iker Casillas," reported AS. "Navas intends to play in Madrid’s first friendly match of the summer against Roma on Saturday, although not all of it."
The Costa Rica international was understandably delighted when cleared of surgery on June 23, per PA Sport (h/t ESPN FC).
Navas has vowed to "fight" for his place if Madrid sign David de Gea from Manchester United this summer, per James Cambridge of the Daily Express on July 6. The No. 1 spot is open following the sale of Iker Casillas to Porto.
The goalkeeper managed just 540 minutes' worth of league football for Madrid during 2014-15, recorded by Soccerway. He is a key player for Costa Rica, which was proven by his terrific performances during last year's World Cup, but he's yet to make the same impact for his club.
