Hosts Get the Job Done
It's hardly been inspiring stuff, but hosts Canada are through to the first knockout round at their World Cup with an unbeaten record thus far.
A draw in Montreal on Monday was enough to see them take the top spot in Group A. That could be a key boost as they should have an easier draw in the next round, when they will play one of the third-place finishers.
Ashley Lawrence saw Canada ahead early on with a fine left-footed finish to calm the nerves, but her strike was cancelled out late on by Kirsten van de Ven.
However, the draw was enough, and Canada qualify as group winners with the fewest goals in the history of the competition, per ESPN's Paul Carr:
China join them in the automatic spots after their 2-2 draw with New Zealand, but the Kiwis can feel hugely hard done by not to be in with a chance of qualifying in third place.
China's opener to cancel out Rebekah Stott's brilliant strike in the first half came courtesy of a penalty awarded for a supposed Betsy Hassett handball that actually hit her chest, per Women's Soccer United:
The second half then saw Shanshan Wang put China ahead, before Hannah Wilkinson equalised for the Ferns, but in the end, the 2-2 draw saw New Zealand finish bottom of Group A and out of the competition.
USWNT Aiming for Top Spot

When the draw for the World Cup was made back in December, Jill Ellis' U.S. side knew they would have a difficult time in arguably the toughest group of the lot.
And so it has proved, as the USWNT have drawn 0-0 with Sweden and been challenged by a strong Australian side in their opening 3-1 win.
However, while there are slight issues at the moment with the Americans not playing as they would like, a victory over Nigeria on Tuesday would see them top Group D, a fine result against tough opponents.
As noted by Bleacher Report's Michael Cummings, while the U.S. have not yet been as potent in attack as many would have been expected, their defending has been excellent:
A similarly solid performance at the back against Nigeria should see them pick up the necessary victory.
If they can keep a clean sheet, they will surely find the openings to score at least once against a Nigerian side who have conceded five times in the tournament so far.
World Cups cannot be won in the group stages, but they can be lost. Top spot is what the U.S. need and want in Group D, and a victory over Nigeria will give them that.
Come the knockout rounds and the improved opposition, the U.S. side will need to step up their game. But they have the talent and experience to do that and are still very much a force to be reckoned with in Canada.
