Verratti Withdraws From Azzurri Squad
Thursday, June 11
“Verratti left the Coverciano training camp (on Thursday) morning as he returned back to his team Paris Saint Germain to undergo medical checks,” an Italian football federation statement read, per Reuters, via SBS.com.
Italy will have to face Croatia in Split without their midfield linchpin, and if results go against the Azzurri, they could drop down to third position in the group at the expense of Norway.
Going to Croatia, who have never lost a European Championship qualifier on home soil, and winning is a tough ask for a toiling team, but to do so without Verratti could be a step beyond this Italy side.
As noted by Football-Italia.net, the 22-year-old's withdrawal was compounded by an injury to fellow midfielder Daniele de Rossi.
Verratti really blossomed last season, marrying pragmatism and panache brilliantly for PSG.
Supporters of the Parisian club need not worry, though. With a summer of recuperation ahead for their star midfielder, Verratti should have ample time to recover and come back fully fit for the beginning of the 2015-16 season.
