England vs. Mexico: Date, Time, Live Stream for 2015 Women's Soccer World Cup

Matt JonesJun 13, 2015

England will be looking to bounce back from their defeat against France in their opening game at the Women’s World Cup when they face Mexico in Moncton in a crucial clash on Saturday.

The Three Lionesses were pretty poor in their 1-0 loss against the French, but they can still salvage a spot in knockout stages with two improved performances against El Tri and Colombia. Mexico drew their opening game 1-1 against Los Cafeteros and look likely to be obstinate opposition for Mark Sampson's side.

Watching England teams at any World Cup is a perennially frustrating experience, and Sampson’s side did little to abate that feeling during the 1-0 loss to France.

Ahead of the tournament, there were soundbites and quips about how this England team were a dark horse and possessed some of the brightest attacking talent in the tournament. However, the team's plan was clear in the opener: sit deep, restrict space and try to stifle their opponents.

As noted by Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated, there was never any point in the match when France looked at all troubled:

It means England have pressure on them in their final two games, matches they arguably should win. But the watching supporters will be desperate to see a more ambitious side take to the field in Moncton and some of the effervescent attacking talent that was shackled in the tournament opener unleashed.

Eniola Aluko is the side’s major attacking threat, but as noted by Michael Cox of Zonal Marking, she cut an isolated figure against the French:

Expect Toni Duggan and Karen Carney to make their first starts of the competition in the Mexico game and for Sampson to send his team out with greater attacking intent. After the France game, assistant manager Marieanne Spacey admitted there will be some changes for England's second Group F match, per Sky Sports News HQ (via Sky Sports):

"

We’ll be looking at Mexico and we’ll be looking at Colombia in a different way and looking to have a different set up to maximise the squad players that we have got.

It’s a game you want to win and we have to take every game now as one we must win and not one we are going to lose.

Their opponents will be keen to bounce back after letting a lead slip in their opener. Mexico were very functional against Colombia and, for the most part, defended brilliantly.

Indeed, as we can see here, the excellent Cecilia Santiago was only beaten by this magnificent strike from Daniela Montoya, per the Women’s Football Twitter account:

England should have too much for the North Americans, though. It was a surprise to see Sampson adopt such an negative approach for the opening match, especially when this team are at their best playing with an attacking intent and raw directness. With Aluko, Duggan and Carney all likely to feature, expect a much more entertaining display.

It’s Mexico who are likely to bunker in throughout this one, and while they possess some excellent technical players, if England play with tempo and purpose, El Tri will find it tough to cope. Expect their defence to be breached late on after some heavy England pressure.

Prediction: England 2-0 Mexico
