EPL Schedule 2015-16: Official List of Fixtures for New Premier League Season

Premier League champions Chelsea will begin their title defence at home against Swansea City next season. Wednesday's release of the 2015-16 schedule also placed Manchester United vs. Tottenham as one of the most anticipated opening-day matches.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has built a reputation for squeezing out results against top teams away from home. Last September's 1-1 draw with Manchester City provided an early signal that his side would find a way to make the Premier League crown their own.

Andre Schurrle's opening goal with 20 minutes left put Chelsea in a position of power. Granted, Pablo Zabaleta's sending off five minutes earlier didn't help the home side, but Chelsea had been forced to soak up pressure for much of the match.

Although Blues legend Frank Lampard grabbed an equaliser with five minutes remaining, Mourinho's men escaped with an useful point, something few teams manage these days. The year before, Branislav Ivanovic's game-winner helped Chelsea to all three points.

Mourinho has a habit of playing conservative football during away games against the best, but in a manner which allows the Blues to take advantage of minimal opportunities.

Eden Hazard previously underlined his improving work rate at the Etihad, where he worked diligently to stop City gathering momentum down his flank. Willian naturally does the same, putting the result before individual glory.

As such, this is the type of fixture in which we learn little about Mourinho—we know he's going to live up to the "boring Chelsea" tag—but learn an awful lot about his team.

It's these performances, in which Chelsea grab a point or three when they're up against it, that separated them from the rest last season.

Similarly, United's 2-1 victory over Liverpool in March signalled the moment fans could genuinely believe Champions League qualification was on.

The win pushed Louis van Gaal's men five points clear of their Anfield rivals, and it was sandwiched between victories over Tottenham Hotspur and City. Nine points which, at the end of the season, defined United's ascension to Europe's elite tournament.

This fixture doesn't scrimp on producing memorable moments. Last year we witnessed Steven Gerrard's sending off and Juan Mata's tasty scissor-kick goal. In 2012 we had the Jonjo Shelvey vs. Jonny Evans clash that saw the former receive his marching orders. It's rare to see an encounter between these two sides pass without incident.

Both will be looking to strengthen throughout the summer. Next season's objective, as an absolute minimum, should be qualifying for the Champions League (although United will be looking to push on).

Brendan Rodgers and Van Gaal are tactical managers who love to observe and change their teams throughout 90 minutes, so this is likely to be a fixture of many phases.

Rivalries don't come fiercer in the English top flight, and with much riding on the midseason fixture, this is going to be one of the campaign's tenser showdowns.
